Vojtech Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, designer, illustrator, painter and teacher. He studied in Prague at the School of Applied Industrial Art, worked in Paris and worked for two years with the Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. His Secessionist style was influenced by Japanese art and Symbolism. In 1903 he founded the periodical Ceska grafika (Czech Graphics) but in 1910 he emigrated to New York, where he stayed until 1930. Returning to his homeland in 1930 he joined the Czech resistance and produced an underground magazine called V Boj (Into the Fight). When captured by the Nazis, his affiliation ensured his execution in Dachau. Size: 4to.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Frontispiece and other decorations by Vojtech Preissig (illustratore). 1st Edition. LRG 039445 This is a lovely book, a limited edition, #160/360 printed on hand-made special paper made by J.W. Zanders and printed in the new Preissig Typ at the State Printing Office in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1930 and distributed by Random House. It includes a wonderful birds eye view of the grave of Benjamin Franklin surrounded by the tall building of Center City Philadelphia, designed by Vojtech Preissig using linocutting and making color plates without acid or tool. The color is quite stunning. Preissig also signed the limitation page. There are also several different very handsome illustrative "devices" -"hinges" on the front free endpapers and on the inside edge of the boards. On the pages with printing on them, there is a "margin" that delineates the text block and it is punctuated by a third device. The spine is covered with cloth and the boards with a grainy paper. There is some soiling to the boards and a little bit inside. The book was in a box which did a good job of protecting this large (12 x 15.5 inches) book but the box paid the price and is broken at top and bottom but been repaired with tape to some extent.
