Title page printed… in red and black. A second title page, for volume 2, printed in black only. 2 volumes bound in one, with continuous pagination. Volume 2's title page is dated 1734, though (volume 1 dated 1735.) Samuel Pufendorf was a influential philosopher of the 17th century. He wrote about Natural Law, disagreed with Hobbes about the state of nature, and feuded with the church. His writings remained at the center of theories of Government and Natural Law through the Enlightenment. He believed that governments derived their power from the governed, not from God. He was influential to the Founding Fathers -- Thomas Jefferson owned two of his books (editions from 1740 and 1749 -- so more recent than this copy). Overall good condition. The Duties of Man and of the Citizen, as proscribed by Natural Law. Text is in French. Previous (original?) owner's name John Bond signed neatly on the front endpaper. Blasendorff, J. Boulanger, N. Cochin, L. Cordier, Dahlbergh, Grignon, F. de Lapointe, J. Le Poutre, N. Perella, N. Pitau, Richer, P. van Schuppen, and W. Swidde, two engraved vignettes in the text, vignette head and tail-pieces and initials throughout, and one or two wood-engraved headpieces and initials (some mostly marginal waterstaining occasionally affecting the image). Contemporary speckled calf, gilt; spine worn with some loss. FIRST GERMAN EDITION which is seldom found complete. Pufendorf's extensive history of Charles X of Sweden (1622-1660) and his brief but glorious seven-year reign, was first published in Latin by Riegel in 1696. Charles X (but really the IV) succeeded his deposed cousin Christina in 1654, and immediately put the nation on a warlike footing with its neighbours. His troops gained a number of important victories in Poland, Denmark and Norway, before he died at the age of 37 from pneumonia. The fine portraits are of Charles XI successor Charles XI, his predecessor Christina, and Charles X himself, his wife Hedwig Eleanora, The plates include Charles X's coronation, sites and dramatic scenes of sieges and battlefields in Poland (including Warsaw, Danzig, and Krakow), Lithuania, Norway and throughout the other Baltic states and the Baltic Sea; and culminate with his catafalque and the staggeringly long panorama of his funeral progress.
