Der Herausgeber Pugin (1802-52) war einer der führenden britischen Architekten des 19. Jhdt. Die topogr. und histor. Beschreibungen von L.-T. Ventouillac in Englisch und Französisch. - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, stellenweise leicht fleckig.

Engraved title page, this volume pp 99-202 with engraved plates with two views to each tissue protected page. Marbled end papers, small water stain to the margin of the last six pages of plates. Four raised bands to black spine strip with gilt decoration, red label with gilt decoration and lettering to front board.

Pugin, Esq. the engravings executed under the superintendence of Mr. C. Heath with topographical and historical descriptions. In two volumes. Volume one only. Moderate wear and tear to leather covers, scuffing, shelf wear, some exposed boards at head and tail of spine and corners. Nice decorative embossing around perimeter of front and back covers, gilt decorations on spine. Marbled endpapers. Title page tearing away for approx. bottom quarter of page, but still well attached. Tear at top of half title as well, not interfering with title text. Binding is sound. Pages have age spots throughout but overall in good condition for its age. Text in both English and French.

Volume one (from 1829) is the text volume, with descriptions in both French and English of Paris landmarks, like Sainte Chapelle, the Church of Notre Dame, the Louvre, etc. Featuring 200 illustrations on 100 plates, done under the direction of A. Pugin, the supervision of C. Heath, and with descriptions by L. T. Ventouillac. Most plates with tissue guard. Volume one with corners rubbed and with edge wear. Pages lightly foxed throughout, not badly effecting text. With former owner's signature on front free endpaper. Volume two with front board broken, but attached. With pages preceding title page detached, but present. This volume shows foxing and water staining throughout which effects about half of the plates. Binding rubbed and scuffed. Overall, in fair condition.

Contemporary owner's name to title-pages. Discreet ex-lib rubber-stamps obscured by stickers to title-pages and a couple of places within. Offsetting and foxing.

A lovely volume consisting of 204 engraved views of Paris, accompanied by descriptive passages.The detailed engravings are the work of Augustus Pugin, an Anglo-French artist, draughtsman and writer on medieval architecture. Whilst Pugin was born in Paris, he left France during the Revolution and spent most of his life in England, thus able to straddle the divide between an insiders and outsiders depiction of the French capitol.The topographical and historical descriptive passages accompanying Pugin's engravings were written by L.T. Ventouillac.Two volumes in one, with a general engraved undated title page only, and continuous pagination. This work contains the contents pages of both volumes. Dated c.1831, as Volume I was published in 1929, and Volume II in 1831.Bearing both a former owner's inscription , 'D. L. Cumming', and contemporary owner's inscription, 'Mrs J. Bolding'. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt detailing. Fading to spine and perimeters of boards. Bumping to spine head and tail, and extremities. Les gravures sont tirées avant la lettre. Une ancienne note manuscrite au crayon à papier au verso du premier feuillet de garde indique : « Large proofs / India paper ». Il s'agit sans doute du tirage cité par Brunet (IV, 961) : "imper.[ial] in-4, india proofs (avant la lettre), 5 liv., 5 sh.". Reliure un peu frottées, un petit manque au bas du dos du premier volume.
