Aggiungi al carrello1st Edition. iv, 200; xxiv, 47, [1 (blank)]; [2], 99, [1 (blank)]; lvi, [1 (blank)] pp. Illustrated with hand-colored lithographs (with light green ink only) by W[alter]. [Hood] Fitch (1817-1892). 8-1/2" x 5-7/8" Thomas Anderson "studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MD in 1853. While at University he became interested in botany, and earned a gold medal for the best local collection of plants, and assisted in arranging the Indian herbarium. In 1854 he entered the Bengal medical service, and went to Calcutta. Subsequently he went to Delhi, where he was actively engaged during the mutiny, returning to Calcutta in 1858. His health failing, he came home, and, the steamer being detained at Aden for some days, he made an interesting collection of the plants of that region, upon which he based his 'Florula Adenensis,' published in 1860." [wiki]. Walter Fitch was a botanical illustrator from Scotland. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora', James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." [wiki]. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Boards and edges are rubbed/(scuffed), some tears to the paper wrapped boards (especially lower board and corners), some soiling to boards and back strip, blue ink inscription to ffep - possible previous signature, some soiling to end papers (particularly to fore-edge), embossed library stamp to head of "List of Papers" (a.k.a. table of contents), age toning to leaves, water damage to fore-edge of leaves as well as a bit to tail -going towards middle of leaves, water damage is most noticeable on the leaves with illustrations (see photos), some light chipping and creasing to lower corner of last few leaves. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. Four volumes, 12mo; without the half-titles or errata slip, but with the two leaves of publisher's advertisements at the end of vol. IV; small wormtrack to first few leaves of vol. I; else a good set in contemporary half calf with marbled sides by T. Jones of Newcastle, with his ticket to vol.I, somewhat inappropriately rebacked in blue calf, gilt; corners worn; bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst.First edition of this epistolary novel by a friend of Byron, the first letter of which was supposedly written by him and given to Dallas (17541824) 'for the purpose of inducing me to continue it'. The Vortex is Dallas's metaphor for metropolitan society; the Gothic story centres on the unexplained stabbing of its eponymous hero, a reformed rake who now writes in warning to a younger companion. After an early life spent partly in Jamaica and North America, Dallas returned to England, turned author, and acquainted himself in 1808 with the young Byron; Dallas's sister was married to Byron's uncle, and he corresponded with the poet extensively between 1808 and 1811. In his Recollections of the Life of Lord Byron, Dallas later recounted receiving from Byron 'two folio sheets of paper, accompanied with the words "Now, do you go on" . it stands the first letter in my novel of Sir Francis Darrell'. The letter in question propounds 'Sir Francis Darrell's' views on women. 'For my part, I regard them as a very beautiful but inferior animal . I look upon them as grown-up children, but like a foolish mamma, am always the slave of some only one. With a contempt for the race, I am ever attached to the individual, in spite of myself'. As Byron's 'literary agent' he arranged for the publication of English Bards with James Cawthorn (1809), and, by placing the first two cantos of Childe Harold with John Murray, began Byron's long, if erratic, association with that house. Byron gave him the royalties for that volume, and later those for TheCorsair. Upon Byron's death, Dallas prepared for the press his truncated Recollections of Byron, ending in 1814, with related correspondence and an important group of letters addressed by Byron to his mother during his eastern travels, which the poet had given to him. Forestalled in this project by an injunction obtained by Byron's executors, Hobhouse and Hansom, Dallas died shortly before his book saw the light.
