Z : 288 Seiten/pp., 285 Abb./ills., clothbound - Eine ganze Reihe beeindruckender Bilder von Jürgen Schadeberg (*1931 in Berlin) ist in die Geschichte eingegangen. Der junge Fotograf ging 1950 nach Südafrika und arbeitete dort für Drum, die erste Ze…itschrift für schwarze Leser, später etwa auch für Time Life und den stern . In den frühen Fünfzigerjahren porträtierte er den jungen Anwalt Nelson Mandela oder die Sängerin Miriam Makeba und das wilde Nachtleben im dynamischen schwarzen Stadtteil Sophiatown. Die ungeschönte Darstellung der ärmlichen Lebensumstände eines Großteils der schwarzen Bevölkerung wurde schließlich zu seinem Hauptanliegen. Als Drum 1964 verboten wurde, verließ Schadeberg das Land und fotografierte die nächsten Jahrzehnte in Europa und USA weiter Menschen und ihren Alltag, ohne dabei je in Stereotypen zu verfallen oder ihnen ihre Würde zu nehmen. 1985 kehrte Schadeberg nach Südafrika zurück und schoss dort 1994 erneut ein Bild, das um die Welt ging: Nelson Mandela, der erste schwarze Präsident Südafrikas, am Fenster seiner früheren Zelle auf Robben Island.
