Despite measures taken by public health authorities to control obesity, number of people affected with obesity and its related disorders are increasing at alarming rate. It is imperative therefore to understand the molecular pathophysiology of obesity prior to undertaking any containment measures. This book summarizes our research work for developing a system with the capability to mine an extensive corpus of scientific articles and produce a network of genes implicated in a given disease. The system has been developed taking Obesity as a test case. The constructed network holds a central place in understanding the pathophysiology of Obesity and will serve as an important tool for the identification of drug targets. This work has been further extended to seven other obesity related disorders (Diabetes Mellitus II, Cholelithiasis, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Osteoarthritis and Fatty Liver) and four control sets (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Contact Dermatitis, Asthma and Urticaria). 64 pp. Englisch.

Here, we present a new machine learning system to mine biological data sets (text data/scientific literature) to understand relations between two genes (two terms) in a scientific text. The system mimics human intelligence and accurately determine the relations between two genes/proteins. We manually curated literature data sets using deep curation to generate training set. Furthermore, our prediction results were validated with the help of experts to generate confidence to use our system in different real time situations. Next the system was made automated so that people across the world can determine relations between two or more molecules in a text using support vector machines. This semi-automated system is frequently applied by our team to write reviews on a given topic. For example, our team was able to screen and mine over 36000 papers to write a review on molecular docking tools. These signals have been mapped into a general machine learning protocol. A web enabled computational protocol for the analysis of mobile genetic elements and their insertion sites, and a resource base containing several genomes,termed ELAN has been developed.
