Het beschrijft de cultuurgeschiedenis van het ijs en de bijbehorende handels- en industriële geschiedenis. Deze geschiedenis, uiteenlopend van het porseleinen ijsgerei van de Europese adel in de 18de eeuw tot de lancering van het nieuwste Magnum-ijsje, is geïllustreerd met ruim 630 afbeeldingen, waarvan het grootste deel in kleur. Het 672 bladzijden tellende boek is gestoken in een gewafelde doos, telt 21 hoofdstukken en vier indexen. Een Coupe Speciaal valt uiteen in drie delen. Het eerste deel beslaat de pre-industriële periode van het ijs, die duurt tot het einde van de 19de eeuw. Hierin worden alle mythes over de herkomst van het ijs ontzenuwd. Het tweede deel van het boek behandelt het industriële tijdperk, en laat zien hoe het ijs een alledaags product is geworden dat voor iedereen en overal te koop is. Het boek beschrijft de ijsmarkten in vele landen (van Japan tot Ierland en Rusland tot Bolivia) en werelddelen. In het derde deel wordt de opkomst van de grootste ijsproducenten Unilever, Nestlé en Mars geschetst. Pim Reinders (1949) werkte drie jaar aan deze studie, die gesponsord werd door Unilever. Hij reisde over de hele wereld, raadpleegde vele archieven en interviewde meer dan 100 werknemers in de ijsbranche. De auteur is cultuurhistoricus en voormalig directeur van museum Mr. Simon van Gijn in Dordrecht. Hij publiceerde onder andere boeken over de Nederlandse koffiegeschiedenis en de rederijreclame in Nederland.…
