Ab 1873 arbeitete Remak zunächst als Assistent des Psychiaters und Neurologen Carl Westphal an der Nervenklinik der Berliner Charite. Bereits 1875 machte er sich selbständig und gründete eine eigene Poliklinik für Neurologie und Elektrotherapie in Berlin.Remak habilitierte 1877 an der Universität Berlin in Neurologie und wurde 1893 zum Professor berufen.Nach ihm benannt wurde das sogenannte Remak-Zeichen oder der Remak-Reflex.
