Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SKYWARD COMMANDER RICHARD E. BYRD 1928 1ST EDITION/1ST PRINTING VERY GOOD. I feel privileged to be able to offer this iconic book of bravery and heroism, especially in the First Edition/First Printing. Please find: Skyward, by Commander Richard E. Byrd, U.S. Navy (Retired). The subtitle reads: Man s mastery of the air as shown by the brilliant flights of America s leading air explorer. His life, his thrilling adventures, his North Pole and Trans-Atlantic flights, together with his plans for conquering the Antarctic by air. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 x 8 ¾ inches, 359 pages) was published by G. P. Putnam s Sons of New York, dated 1928. There is a note on the copyright page which says: This copy is from the first printing of Skyward and will be the only printing to contain the photogravure frontispiece portrait of the author. The book is bound in sky blue cloth covers with bold gilt titles on the cover and spine. The book is well illustrated with 48 b&w photographs, typically one to a page on glossy paper and each with its explanatory caption. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are bright and very presentable, particularly the gilt titles but there has been some minor rubbing to the edges and light bumping to the corners and spine tips. Inside, the book is unmarked except for a neat bookplate of a former owner on the front endpaper. The interior pages and plates are clean and bright throughout, without toning and certainly no foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates and front and rear endpaper maps. "In leading NATO to victory in Kosovo, General Wesley Clark experienced all of the triumphs and frustrations of coalition warfare in a 24-hour media age. This book is a gripping tale of how the alliance's first military campaign was run, including a must-read account of bureaucratic warfare with his own civilian bosses in Washington." - Christiane Amanpour. "Ugly, Shocking, Frightening, war came to Europe once more in March 1999. The world watched in dismay as Yugoslavia's military machine attacked its own citizens in the province of Kosovo. Pictures of refugees fleeing and stories of murder and rape flashed to the top of the news. As had happened so often since the end of the Cold War, ethnic conflict had turned deadly, and the great powers seemed reluctant to get involved. This time, however, the United States and its allies intervened. Using an innovative, high-technology air operation, NATO brought modern military power to bear against Serb forces in the field and the machinery of repression that backed them up. It was modern war - limited in scope, measured in effect, extraordinarily complex in execution. And in the end, after ten weeks of steadily intensifying air attack, the Yugoslav troops were withdrawn and the Kosovar Albanians returned to therir homes. Remarkably, not a single Ameican was killed in combat. The American commander who oversaw this massive military effort and managed the often incompatible demands of NATO's nineteen governments was General Wesley K. Clark. In Waging Modern War, Clark recounts not only the events that led to armed conflict, but also the context within which he made the key strategic decisions. He also describes, for the first time, how he walked the tightrope of high diplomacy and military strategy and navigated the crushing restraints of domestic politics. As the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, Clark faced a task far more daunting than simply when and where to deploy his forces and weapons. He also had to mediate numerous conflicts that threatened to derail the alliance's efforts against the regime of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic - conflicts between the Europeans and the Americans, between the policy makers and the journalists, between the diplomats and the military men. Clark takes us behind the scenes for an unprecedented view of decision making in real time, and through his unvarnished account we see: The struggle to lead NATO's militaries in fighting a precision war under the glare of the modern media; The conflict within NATO about when and how to take a stand against Milosevic, ethnic cleansing, and instability in the Balkans; The contest for the direction of U.S. policy between the Pentagon and the State Department; Clark's battles with his superiors in the Pentagon over the strategy and tactics of the operation. The war in Kosovo may have been short in duration, but it was a harbinger of the new realities of war-fighting and war-planning, and Clark offers a blueprint for how the American military infrastructure must adapt if it is to meet the new threats that are likely to emerge in the coming years and decades. Waging Modern War is thus the story not only of war today, but also of war as it will be fought tomorrow." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Gaffney, Evan (jacket design) (illustratore). …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. 272 pages. Text tanned 'Security Without Nuclear Deterrence' is the latest book by Commander Robert Green, Royal Navy (Retired), a former operator of British nuclear weapons and th e first ex-British Navy Commander with nuclear weapon experience to speak out ag ainst them. The book is a carefully researched and documented critique which exp oses the contradictions and fallacies of nuclear deterrence, and concludes that nuclear weapons undermine rather than enhance security. Positioning nuclear disa rmament as a security-building process, Commander Green offers alternative route s to co-operative security without nuclear weapons, based on more humane, lawful and safer strategies to deter aggression. The arguments he raises are critical if there is to be any serious prospect of eliminating nuclear weapons.…

Gould's Enigmas: Another Book of Unexplained Facts follows his successful Oddities with a further collection of historical mysteries, unusual phenomena and seemingly inexplicable events, approached with Gould's characteristic mixture of curiosity, careful research and healthy scepticism. Among the subjects examined are strange archaeological and historical puzzles, remarkable natural phenomena and long-standing stories whose factual foundations Gould attempts to disentangle from legend and exaggeration. Published in 1929, Enigmas further established the former Royal Navy officer, horologist and polymath as an engaging investigator of the mysterious and unexplained, treating subjects often associated with the sensational in a notably thoughtful and enquiring manner. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Rupert T. Gould's Oddities: A Book of Unexplained Facts is a fascinating collection of historical mysteries, strange phenomena and apparently inexplicable events, examined with considerably more scepticism and scholarly curiosity than its title might suggest. Gould - a former Royal Navy officer, horologist and polymath best remembered for his pioneering restoration of John Harrison's marine chronometers - investigates subjects ranging from Nostradamus and unexplained disappearances to curious natural phenomena, extraordinary people and other puzzles that had resisted conventional explanation. First published in 1928, Oddities became one of Gould's best-known books and remains an engaging early example of the serious investigation of anomalous and unexplained phenomena. Oddities; A Book of Unexplained Facts, by Lieut.-Commander Rupert T. Gould., R.N. (Retired). Published by Philip Allan & Co. Ltd., London. 1928 first edition. Uncommon as a first printing. A good (minus) blue cloth hardback with gilt title to spine. No dustjacket. Spine is a little sunned and cloth with a few marks. Frayed to head and tail of spine, which is also a little cocked. Inner hinge is cracked to webbing at rear. Text is generally clean with occasional scattered spotting. Some foxing to endpapers and titles. Previous owner's name to first free endpaper. Illustrated. Text in English. Frontispiece of Nostradamus + 336pp + VII Plates (all as called for). Weight approximately 534g. Dimensions: Approximately 218mm high x 150mm wide x 40mm deep.…
