She was the second ship to arrive in the area - after HMS V…engeance - at the commencement of the landings in Suvla Bay in April 1915, and she was present at the withdrawal and evacuation of the Allied bridgehead in December, firing her guns to cover the departure, and setting Turkish stores ablaze. This book - aptly titled The Immortal Gamble, a phrase uttered by Winston Churchill to describe the campaign he largely initiated - tells the entire story of Cornwallisâs operations, and therefore is an important narrative of the campaign itself. Co-Written by Cornwallisâs acting Commander, A.T. Stewart, and by the shipâs chaplain, the Rev. C.J.E.Peshall, this is an unmissable book for all those interested in naval operations in the Great War - and Gallipoli in particular. Spine has splitting and small loss at the extremities; spine surface is creased; front cover displays scattered staining (see picture), Rear cover has bumped and considerably creased fore-edge corners ; rear surface rub is modest; cover edges display small nicks and tears. Text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING --Still fairly tight. INTERIOR -- Next to four names in the list of the Board of Councilors are penciled the word "Dead", else I saw no other marking or writing in the book. The leaves closest to the rear cover are quite ragged at the corners; many of the book's leaves have bumped corners, with a few displaying accompanying creasing or dog - ears. The text throughout is clean, and the photographs display cleanly.
