Smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt double fillets and blind pallets, lettered in the second and numbered in the fourth, the others with a gilt flower-head and blind fronds and fleurons, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt broken fillet, the turn-ins with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Spines a little rubbed). First published in 1746 and frequently thereafter. Some light spotting or foxing, but a distinguished copy, belonging to Edward Bligh, Lord Clifton. Born in 1795, he attended Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford and served as MP for Canterbury from 1818 until 1830. He was styled as Lord Clifton until 1831, when he succeeded his father as 5th Earl of Darnley. He was Lord Lieutenant of Co. Meath from 1831 until his death in 1835. The Darnley family seat of Cobham Hall in Kent was sold in 1955.

First published in 1746, James Hervey"s devotional work reflects on mortality, nature, and divine providence through a series of poetic essays.The book consists of two main parts: 'Meditations among the Tombs', which contemplates death and the afterlife, and 'Reflections on a Flower-Garden', which draws religious lessons from nature.Illustrated with a frontispiece and two engraved plates. Collated, complete.Rebacked, in a full reverse calf binding.Hervey had a lasting impact on art through William Blake, who was an admirer of his, and influenced Blake's poem 'The Tyger'.Published in the civil parish of Burslem, Stoke on Trent, in the early 19th century by Tregortha, a major figure in the book trade of the region, and provided printing and binding services. He printed about eighty-one books and pamphlets, many of a religious nature between 1796 and his death in 1821. Rebacked, in a full reverse calf binding. Loss to head of fore edge of front board. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with significant rubbing to spine label. Joint heads starting, with boards firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Hervey was Rector of the Weston-Favell parish in Northamptonshire; the content of his meditations and contemplations with largely devotional literature but none the less also an interesting insight into his life and times. It is particularly notable for his tract vindicating the prophecy of Noah, in response to Lord Bolingbroke's earlier expose. 8vo.
