A lecture exploring stained glass as both decorative and symbolic element in ecclesiastical architecture. The illustrations found in leading architectural journals of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as The Builder, Building News, and The Architect are masterpieces of visual craftsmanship. These illustrations capture the elegance, intricacy, and stylistic flair of the period's architecture. Rich in ornamental detail and atmospheric depth, they reflect not only the buildings themselves but the artistic sensibilities and design discourse of their age. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair / Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dustjacket. One inch thick. This is a difficult book to describe as it appears to be a bound together set of short plays (some one act plays even) - by the looks of the paper and printing it looks early 19th century. I have photographed all the title pages and uploaded them as photographs. I can supply pictures of the title pages I didn't have room to upload on this listing. The hardback binding comprises a plain leather(?) spine which is rubbed, scratched and has pieces missing to the top - the spine-junctions are a darker brown which suggests the spine has been sun-faded to a chipped, lighter brown. There is a short piece of scribble to top right of front board. The page-edges are rough-cut and browned and the page-margins are lightly browned but are clean and tidy. Amongst the plays are unrelated contents pages and some reviews of actors and there are rather crudely coloured-in plates.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Vol. I. Frontispiece portrait of Rev. Poole, 4 pages preface, followed by the Annotations upon Genesis through to Isaiah unpaginated. Vol II. 4 pages preface, followed by Annotations upon Jeremiah through to the Book of Malachi. Then follows Annotations upon the Gospels through to the Book of Revelations unpaginated. Contemporary calf over boards with a leather spine label on both volumes. The text "This book belongs to the Heirs of the Late Rev. Oliver Peabody Natick" is handwritten in old script on the inside front board in both volumes. The most likely scenario is whoever formulated the sentence wanted to ensure proper "current" ownership and a previous ownership by Reverend Peabody. Rev Matthew Poole (1624-1679) was an English theologian, a jure divino presbyterian and biblical commentator. In his Annotations upon the Holy Bible, Rev Poole got as far as Isaiah before he died in 1679. The additional books were completed by his Nonconformist brethren. The preface in vol I provides for an interesting overview of the English translations of the Bible starting with William Tydale. This learned Biblical commentary soon became part of the recommended reading for every clergyman in England and quite popular among colonial American clergy as well. The importance of Poole continued into the 19th century. The Banner of Truth website writes: The well-known 19th century Preacher "C.H. Spurgeon advised his students that Poole s volumes are necessities for your library , and gave this testimony of his own experience of their worth. On the whole, if I must have only one commentary, and had read Matthew Henry, as I have, I do not know but what I should choose Poole. See Lowndes p1912. Both volumes were certainly well appreciated for their content. It is rather extraordinary that the frontispiece portrait of Rev. Poole has survived. Marginal tears to the title page with loss. There are marginal tears to the paper in numerous areas with some loss of text and the last leaves are torn, but present. Wear along the extremities of the bindings and corners worn. Some scattered foxing and occasional ink stains. Despite all a well-preserved copy not often found complete.
