Nur so kann man verstehen. warum der Entwicklungsgang des Theaters und zugleich auch der des Balletts in diesen Ländern anders und wesentlich schwieriger war als der eigenstaatücher Völker. In diesem Kampf fiel dem Volkslied und dem Volkstanz im vorigen Jahrhundert eine wichtige Rolle zu. In der Zeit der nationalen Wiedergeburt wurden Volkslied und Volkstanz zur starken Stütze des Nationalbewußtseins und verdrängten aus den Salons und Bällendes jungen fortschrittlichen Bürgertums sogar die fremden Formen der damals beliebten Gesellschaftstänze. .
