He came to the United States when he was just 12-years old. He went on to co-found the San Francisco chapter of the AIGA, including serving a nine-year board position as design historian. In 2001 Reoutt received the AIGA Fellowship award for "personal and professional contributions to raising the standards of excellence within our design community." He passed away May 14, 2008.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. This first edition, folio lithograph after a poster is from "Les Maitres de l'Affiche". The work was published by Imprimerie Chaix under the direction of Jules Cheret in Paris between 1896 and 1900. The prints were published as a monthly subscription, with 4 sent each month to subscribers. On 16 occa…sions "bonus" plates of original designs by noted artists were also included. Each lithograph features the blind embossed stamp of Maitres de l'Affiche designed by Cheret. Celebrated artists of the time contributed to the work including Steinlen, Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Forain, Grasset, Meunier, Louis Rhead, Dudley Hardy, Beggarstaff, Edward Penfield et al. --- Jules Cheret was considered the father of poster art. "He dominated the series, with one in every four Maitres by him, the first in each monthly instalment, and 7 of the Special plates, a total of 67. With over 1000 poster designs to his credit, his large representation in the series is justified, although some critics have pointed out that, as the artistic director, he may have been biased towards selecting his own work." (Appelbaum p.iii) Cheret demonstrated a unique combination of artistic, technical, and entrepreneurial talent that spearheaded the poster industry. He opened his own print shop in 1866 in Paris and from 1881 on his shop operated as part of the Chaix firm which gave us "Les Maitres de l'Affiche". --- Among the most sought after plates in the work are the "Job" and "Moulin Rouge" by Toulouse Lautrec. Rennert noted of the "Job" by Mucha that "more than any other work of Mucha's, this beauty established him as the master of convoluted hair and the creator of unforgettable popular images; the poster was used for years in many variants all over the world, sometimes with marginal text in various languages. A classic by any standard." (Rennert, PAI-XLIX 389) "Jane Abdy called it "a secular icon," and indeed it is a magnificent production, considering that it advertises cigarette paper. "The background, in a dull imperial purple is a perfect foil for the golden curls of the smoking girl, whose locks are spread over the poster like the delicate filigree work of an Indian bracelet"(Abdy, p.136) --- This art subscription was created during the Belle Epoque period in France. "There was nothing exclusive about the 'joie de vivre' that swept Paris, at a delirious pace, out of the 19th century into the 20th. As Victor Hugo had observed, the city lived by, and for, the whole human race. Haussman's great boulevards had opened up a spacious stage where Paris made a spectacle of herself by day and night. Outdoors and indoors the walls of buildings flowered with posters that took their themes from the passing show of 'La Vie Parisenne.' Advertising never knew happier days. The most ephemeral of the arts has left us with a vision of the 'good old days' that vanished forever in the gunsmoke of 1914. Those gay nineties and naughty noughts that will always be remembered as 'La Belle Epoque.'(The beautiful era)" (Horizon p. 97) --- "By the 1890s the streets of every great metropolis were enlivened by large colourful posters (see The Great Poster Movement). The poster had not only caught the fancy of the broad public, but its best examples were already being regarded as works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reprinted in a manageable form. In the last five years of the century, the Imprimerie Chaix was to play great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient period of 'La Belle Epoque.' It was in those years that the firm published "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" (Masters of the Poster) reduced lithographic versions, in authentic colours, of the best posters of Europe and America, by more than 90 great artists, posters that bring the period to life." Aquateinte en couleurs (38cm X 27cm) . Cinq femmes assises sur les rochers devant un port avec plusieurs bateaux et barques. Signée en bas à droite. Belles marges. Bon état. Manuel Robbe, né Emmanuel Robbe le 16 décembre 1872 à Paris, où il est mort le 5 juillet 1936, est un peintre et graveur français. Robbe devient rapidement…un graveur accompli se spécialisant dans la technique de l'aquatinte. Il expose régulièrement dans les salons de la Société des artistes français ; les marchands parisiens Edmond Sagot, Georges Petit et Pierrefort éditent et diffusent ses uvres gravées. En 1895, son affiche pour la lampe à pétrole L'Éclatante est reproduite dans la revue Les Maîtres de l'affiche éditée par Jules Chéret (1895-1900)2. Une gravure intitulée Menuet d'automne, est publiée dans L'Estampe moderne (1897). En 1900, lors de l'Exposition universelle, son travail est récompensé de la médaille de bronze, pour une gravure intitulée L'été (eau-forte en couleurs de 25,5 × 40 cm). Ses dessins sont publiés dans Cocorico (1898-1900) et Le Frou-frou (1901-1902)3. Entre 1905 et 1907, la galerie Georges Petit présente ses travaux dans le cadre salon annuel de la Société de la gravure originale en couleurs. Durant sa vie d'artiste, Manuel Robbe produit beaucoup d'aquatintes, de pointes sèches, d'eaux fortes et quelques affiches publicitaires ainsi que de nombreuses uvres uniques (huiles sur toile, aquarelles ou pastels). Les uvres de Manuel Robbe sont un témoignage émouvant de la vie des femmes et des hommes de son époque. Manuel Robbe aime beaucoup voyager et a un réel attachement pour la Bretagne qu'il a dépeinte en de nombreuses occasions.

The lithographs were printed under the supervision of C. Masson and H. Piazza and published in Paris between May 1897 and April 1899.The work was sent out every… month with four prints and a cover with art work by Alphonse Mucha by subscription only. The intention of this work was to âreanimate and disseminate the taste for printsâ (issue 24), thus 2000 of each print were published plus 100 on Japan paper.This famous collection included works by major Art Nouveau artists including Alphonse Mucha, Louis Rhead, Marcel Lenoir, Henri Boutet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Edward Burne-Jones, and Thà ophile Steinlen. Every print has the blind stamp of a womanâs profile in a lower corner. The large format lithographs are on excellent quality paper. When available we will include a tissue descriptive paper original to the work.The lithographs were done by the artists, rather than after, which makes the plates original Art Nouveau. --- The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. Magnifique publication mensuelle française éditée entre mai 1897 et avril 1899,L'Estampe modernese constitue de chromolithographies inédites qui, contrairement à d'autres revues commeLesMaîtres de l'Afficheet tel qu'il est stipulé sur les serpentes, ont été réalisées spécialement par chaque artiste pour la revue. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899, L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which, unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards, were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints were published in total, covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Pre-Raphaelites, Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential delux.

Manuel Robbe was highly influenced by the most important French artists of th…e nineteenth century: Degas, Renoir, Legrand, Chahine and Lautrec, who were his elder contemporaries, all had major impacts on his composition. Robbe delighted in depicting women. He focused on highlighting their individuality and interests, while also celebrating their beauty. His prints chronicled the emerging status of women as decision-makers and connoisseurs, as well as their ability to judge and appreciate art. Throught this lense of respect and appreciation he was able to show their sensuality, sociability, and the ability of the modern women to elegantly enjoy the simple pleasures in life, while also assuming a status and position in the arts once only enjoyed by men.

Zwischen 1898 und 1914 schuf Robbe eine große Zahl an teils großformatigen Graphiken (Aquatinten, Lithographien) von 25 - 65/90 Abzügen je Motiv,… wobei er einen malerischen Stil mit ungewöhnlichen Farbtönen anwandte: volles samtiges Schwarz, cremefarbenem Weiß gegenübergestellt, fahles Rosa oder (wie hier) verwaschenes Braun, Ocker u. nebliges Silbergrau. - Gebräunt (durch Trägerpappe), etwas verblasst.
