Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Second edition. 8vo. pp. xxxii, 463; port. frontis. of M'Clure, four lithograph plates after originals by Commander S. Gurney Cresswell, one folding map; a little creasing to fore-edges of prelims., slightly shaken in the original blue cloth, gilt, neatly restored to extremities. With the clipped signature of Robert M'Clure pasted to flyleaf. Sent out in 1850 by the Admiralty to search for Franklin via Bering Strait, M'Clure in the Investigator and Collinson in the Enterprise made their way to Prince of Wales Strait, where they wintered 1850-51, and explored the shores of Banks Island and M'Clure Strait as far as Mercy Bay. There the Investigator became frozen in the ice, and was later abandoned in June of 1853. M'Clure's sledge party continued eastward over Barrow Strait to Dealy island where they encountered a Franklin search party from Sir Edward Belcher's expedition travelling westward, and returned with them in 1854 to England, thus completing the first crossing of the Northwest Passage. This second edition of M'Clure's account expands the first edition by the addition of a frontispiece portrait of M'Clure after the original by Stephen Pearce, a new preface, additional tables at the rear, and an additional appendix by Sir Roderick Murchison on geology. Signed by Author(s). …

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. Folding coloured map & 4 lithographed plates. 8vo. A fine copy in publisher's navy cloth, spine gilt, some very slight rubbing. xix, [1], 405, [1], 28.ads.pp. London, Longman, Brown, Green et al., A handsome copy of the first edition. "Captain M'Clure commanded this expedition on the Investigator, with the primary mission of rescuing the missing Sir John Franklin. While M'Clure did not accomplish this task, in his efforts to return to England from the Bering Strait he completed the long-anticipated Northwest Passage, a feat for which he was knighted, and also collected the £10,000 reward offered by Parliament" (Hill). It was hardly smooth sailing. The Investigator was originally accompanied by the Enterprise, captained by Richard Collinson, though the two ships were separated early on in the Straits of Magellan. M'Clure's party entered the Arctic via the Bering Strait, wintering at Prince of Wales Strait and made it as far east as Mercy Bay. At this point - June, 1853 - the ship was abandoned and the crew, suffering from scurvy and frostbite, were miraculously rescued by Captain Henry Kellet's expedition who were also searching for Franklin. The crew of the Investigator were away for four years and eight months. The map shows M'Clure's crossing of the Northwest Passage and the plates, after Cresswell, depict Franklin Bay, Princess Royal Island, and Melville Island.
