Soft cover. Condizione: VG. 12pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 11 drawings in the Japanese wood-block print style, minor damp-staining noted at some page bottoms, salvaged from a damaged issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Volume L, No. 3, July, 1895. From the introduction, "Fifteen years ag…o, an American tourist, returning from an evening call in Tokio, was attracted to a book-stand illuminated by a flickering lamp. His eye was at once caught by a color print meant unmistakably for an American soldier. During his efforts to negotiate a purchase.the salesman gathered together nine little books which evidently went together as one set, and which the tourist discovered to be a life of General Grant in Japanese. The Rev. J. S. Motoda, a native Japanese then residing at the Episcopal Divinity School in West Philadelphia, produced the following literal translation of the more interesting parts of the work." Housed in protective mylar report cover. Sensai Yeitaku (illustratore).

Reprint. Colour woodblock prints throughout with one black and white illustration of bamboo, 18 x 12cm, 40 double folded leaves, 4 hole stab binding, paper title label upper cover. Bound in little worn blue paper wrappers, resewn four hole binding. Good copy. This charming picture book, created by Dontei Robun (later known as Ka…nagaki Robun), was originally published in 1857. Although the title label simply reads Ehon Hayamanabi, the foreword clarifies that this is the first volume of a series. The book is filled with delicate and lively woodblock print illustrations that vividly depict the day-to-day activities of ordinary people during the Edo period, as well as scenes of nature, including birds, trees, flowers, and insects. The illustrations capture a variety of engaging moments, such as adults and children playing board games or learning calligraphy, offering a delightful glimpse into the cultural and social life of the time.

2 volumes comprising the complete text of Chapter 4 the Singapore chapter. Volume I includes 3 colour woodblock illustrations of which one, the scene of Singapore is double page, together with a number in black and white. Volume II: Black and white woodblock illustrations. Both volumes comprise 20 folded leaves with woodblock pr…inted text. 18.5 x 12cm. Original four hole stab binding, paper covered wrappers embossed with national flags. Corners of leaves including Singapore image a little soiled from thumbing, brown stain margins of first leaves volume II. Paper title labels and covers quite worn and soiled. Upper cover of the first volume and lower cover volume II little ink stained. A sound copy. Kanagaki Robun's fifteen chapter comic saga, 'By Shank's Mare Through the West [or By Shank's Mare to the Western Seas]' was published between 1870 and 1876. The text is complete 15 chapters which were published in 30 volumes. The inspiration for this work came from the earlier 'T?kai d?ch? hizakurige' or 'Travels on Foot on the T?kaid?' published in serial form between 1802 and 1822 which was translated into English as 'Shank?s Mare' by Jippensha Ikku. This earlier work described two travelling companions and their adventures on the Tokaido Road. Kanagaki Robun took the model of the two travelling companions who were supposed to be descendants of the original pair and set them off around the world to visit a London Exposition in UK. This fourth chapter, which covers their journey through Singapore, features an early Japanese colour woodblock view of Singapore by Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904), signing himself on this image as Ikkunsai Yoshiiku ??? ?? In this chapter, the pair had an adventure in a watermelon field and got into a trouble when they wanted to have affairs with local prostitutes. Kanagaki Robun, the pen name Nozaki Bunz? (1829 - 1894), was a highly regarded author and journalist in Japan in the late Edo and early Meiji periods. He was very interested in Japan's opening to the west and the process of modernization in general which the country was undergoing. Using satirical writing to examine the changing society in which he lived, his work proved very popular. He never had a chance to go overseas, but was literate in English. Thus, his story was not totally unrealistic. He was well connected in artistic circles and worked with many of the leading artists of the day including Kawanabe Kyosai, Yoshiiku, Yoshitoshi, Yoshitora, Yoshitoyo, Hiroshige III, Yoshu Chikanobu, and Toyohara Kunichika, often working in collaboration with more than one artist at a time. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. A set of books on the history, customs, geography, and natural environments of Asia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, North Africa, South Africa, and Australia, delicately illustrated in woodcuts by acclaimed Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889). As the description of the vol…ume on Australia (v.7) held at the State Library of N.S.W. states, "The depiction of the Aboriginal Australian characters appears as a generic depiction of dark skinned people; for example, the figures are set before pyramids (African continent), and one of the figures is shown holding what appears to be a human foot. The figures are negatively referred to in a caption as 'drunk'." Includes six colour woodblock-printed maps, as well as many more black-and-white woodblock-printed vignettes. A very interesting if tenuous link between Kyosai and Australia/ New Zealand. Volume 7 only is held by the State Library of New South Wales. Original Japanese fukuro toji binding, paper wrapper, with original title slip. Occasional rubbing on the wrapper. Minor stains and faint creasing on the contents. Overall very good to near fine condition. 7 v., complete. 22,5 x 15,1 cm. 52, 45, 46, 40, 38, 26, 17 (+ 10 of advertisements) leaves. Condizione: Near fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near fine. The two-volume first (and only) series of Kanagaki Robun and Kawanabe Kyosaiâs Kappa S?den Kyurizukai (âKappas' Talks on Science: How to Use Cucumbersâ). The title of the text is a parody of Fukuzawa Yukichiâs best-selling Kyurizukai (âThe Uses of Scienceâ), an elementa…ry school textbook which simply explained western physics, natural history, and geography. Kappa Soden Kyurizukai is a satirical essay that replaces physics with topics from everyday life such as nightlife and the westernification of food to entertain the reader. It is an interesting work that clearly shows the customs of Tokyo during the enlightenment period. The two volumes include two colour woodblock-printed illustrations and many black and white woodblock-printed illustrations. Original wrappers, lightly soiled. Slight wear to page extremities. Otherwise very good to near fine. 2 v. 22 leaves. 18.2 x 12.2 cm. Text in Japanese. Kawanabe, Kyosai (illustratore). Used book.

Softcover. Condizione: Very good to near fine. A set of thirty consecutive issues of `Robun Chinpo`, from the founding of the magazine to the thirtieth issue, bound in three volumes (November 28, Meiji 10 [1877], to November 16, Meiji 11 [1878]). `Robun Chinpo`, the famous magazine by author and journalist Kanagaki Robun (1829_1…894), skillfully conveyed the Japanese culture and social conditions of the time to readers, and focussed heavily on literature and customs. The magazine included many articles on cats, perhaps because Robun was known to have a soft spot for the furry creatures. In this set, issues eight and nine are titled `Hyaku Neko Gafu` (`Album of One Hundred Cats`), and are dedicated solely to illustrations of cats by Hiroshige III and articles on cats. The illustrated wrappers of the issues were designed by Kawanabe Kyosai, and issues 1-4 include several illustrations by the famous artist. While the magazine was published in a total of 34 issues, consecutive runs as long as this are scarce. Re-bound, wrappers worn and a little stained, some chipping to extremities. Slight loss to upper edge of upper wrapper of v.3. Handwritten title slips to v.1-2, that of v.3 missing. Occasional light foxing and stains to text. Some discolouration, tears, and chips to leaf extremities. Original wrappers bound-in. Very good to near fine. 3 v. Each issue with 10 to 15 leaves. Text in Japanese. Used book.

In Robun's Seiy? d?ch? hizakurige, the protagonists also named, Yajir? and Kitahachi, are the grandsons of original Yajir?bei and Kitahachi and their journey takes them across the world to see the London International Exhibition in 1862. First Edition. Illus. by Ky?sai Kawanabe ???? Double-page frontispiece illus. printed in color & numerous other illus. (some printed in color). 30 (title printed on yellow paper); 32; 26 folding leaves. Three vols. Small 8vo, orig. semi-stiff blue wrappers, title-slips on upper covers, new stitching. Tokyo & other cities: Mankyu…kaku ???, 1872. First edition of this rare work; it is complete with the supplementary third volume. Finely illustrated by Ky?sai Kawanabe, it is one of the two earliest books to introduce Western cooking techniques and recipes into Japan (the other is Keigakuo Shujin's Seiy? ry?ri shinan, published in the same year). Our book is the first work to include the recipes for the beloved "curry and rice," introduced by British sailors and still so popular in Japan; pork cutlet; and apple pie. Kanagaki (1829-94), was a journalist and author of light fiction. He and his friend and collaborator, the painter Ky?sai Kawanabe (1831-89), lauded as the greatest successor of Hokusai, created what is considered to be the first manga magazine, Eshinbun nipponchi (Illustrated News). Roger Keyes, in his Ehon. The Artist and the Book in Japan (NYPL: 2006), p. 234, describes Ky?sai as "prodigiously talented." Kanagaki drew from a manuscript notebook of recipes compiled by an English person living in Yokohama. The notebook had been prepared to teach the family's Japanese servants how to prepare Western dishes. The first double-page color printed illustration depicts two Japanese and two Westerners, all in Western clothes, being served a meal by a Chinese servant. The following illustrations depict Western table- and glassware, cutlery, Western ovens and pans, table settings, etc. There are 110 recipes: those in Vol. I are devoted to soups; the second to fish, meats, stews, and sauces; and the third to vegetables and desserts as well as cooking times and techniques. The woodcut illustrations are particularly handsome and show scenes from the kitchen with servants making broth, roasting meats, and preparing fish; the Yokohama food market; Westerners entertaining Japanese, etc. The introduction to this work makes it clear the book was written for the purpose of improving the nutrition of the Japanese. Fine copy. Minor marginal worming in Vols. II and III. ? For the artist Ky?sai, see Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, pp. 937 & 955.

SADAHIDE,Gyokuransai and KANAGAKI, Robun. Yokohama Miyage. Two volumes 18x12cm, original decorated wrappers, (worn but solid) with original printed label on the first volume and an old manuscript replacement on the second; Each with 25 folded leaves all with colour woodcuts. 8vo. wrappers. [Tokyo] : Gifuya Seishichi,1860. This i…s an early survey of Yokohama, published shortly after it was opened as a foreign port in 1859. Gifuya Seishichi initially issued it in five parts in 1860. This version is a compilation of the five parts without title pages and colophon. This would appear to be as issued, divided exactly in half in the middle of part three. NIJL (National Institute of Japanese Literature) illustrates the Yokohama City Library copy of the first volume identical to ours. Waseda has a copy in the same wrappers with parts four and five together. They also have parts one to three in the original form. This an extremely appealing work, one of whose features is that many of the plates can be joined together to form panoramas. The wrappers are a little grubby, nevertheless this is a rare, important and visually attractive book on Yokohama. OCLC lists a copy at Stanford.

Condizione: Very good. Broadsheet (354 x 235 mm) with contemporary hand-coloring (several wormholes in the face of the robber and one above his head; portion of the paper on upper right defective, just touching text), affixed at upper corners to a sheet of modern paper. DRAMATIC ILLUSTRATION OF THE STRANGE TALE OF YABUHARA KENGY…O, a villainous blind masseur / accupuncturist who was the subject of many Japanese folktales of the 19th-20th century. It is thought that he is based on some historical personage, but this has never been verified. The story goes that he killed his teacher and devoted himself to a life of crime. Here the evil Yabuhara, with an acupuncture needle in his mouth, having untied the victim's belt, rustles through the poor peddler's clothes seeking valuables. THE LEGEND: This fiendish blind masseur was originally named Sugi no Ichi. He kills a peddler in the mountains of Hakone and steals his money. The murderer also kills his teacher (Yabuhara Kengyo I) and then succeeds to his master's name as Yabuhara Kengyo II. He becomes a moneylender and becomes involved with the teacher's wife and so on. In our print, a statue of Jizo, protector of souls of deceased children, can be discerned on the far right, illuminated by lightning which flashes against the black night sky; the small stone that are piled up in front of it refer to the Sisyphean labors that these poor souls are condemned to do: stack stones on top of each other for all eternity, while demons gleefully knock them down. Jizo is also the protector of wayfaring travelers, which is curious because the victim of the present scene was himself a wayfarer! Perhaps the artist is implying that, having chosen a holy place for such crime, Yabuhara will be headed straight to hell. Our print of the Yabuhara story is from a series based upon popular kodan, or oral narratives. The kodan were often drawn from actual historical events that raconteurs spun into captivating narratives. The print names Ichiryusai Bunsha as the kodan who told this story, probably Ichiryusai Bunsha II (d. 1881). The author of the text itself, Kanagaki Robun, was a very popular writer during this period. Here he took the kodan account of the crime and gave it a literary polish. His extraordinary text reads: "A roll of thunder struck the peddler / street performer with terror, causing him to lose his breath in the mountains around Hakone. While traveling, it is good to have a companion to share the road, and the [blind] man who joined him on this journey also offered kindly [medical] treatment. But he was blinded by avarice, turning all to darkness before his eyes. He groped about, searching [his victim's] waistband. The waves lapped the lakeshore, unaware of the serious crime. Rather than "Sai no kawara" [see below]], this man's destination will be to a little hell or a great hell. Ultimately, he will be brought before the register of Enma, lord of the underworld, and once placed before the mirror of judgment, the sins of this blind man will become clear." NOTE: "Sai no kawara" is the name of the riverbank in the underworld where deceased children are condemned to limbo and where the bodhisattva Jizo (Ksitigarbha) protects their souls. We are grateful to Matthew Fraleigh for his translation and research.
