Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine to fine condition. dj. First edition. Folio (12 1/4 x 9 3/4"). 287, [1]pp. Original black cloth with blind-stamped decor on cover, silver lettering on spine, in photo-illustrated dust-jacket, silver lettering on spine, protected by original modern mylar. Black illustrated endpapers. Color-photogr…aphic half titles. B/w photographic frontispiece portrait of Alexander Calder. Splendidly illustrated throughout with no less than 197 color and 59 b/w photographic reproductions, "Calder Jewelry" features more than 450 bracelets, brooches, necklaces, and rings, photographed in still life by Maria Robledo. Also included are Calder's inventory drawings, boxes he made to transport and store the jewelry, historic photographs of his exhibitions and of jewelry worn by notable collectors and artists, and an extensive chronology. Essays discuss the relationship of these objects to the artist's other endeavors and in relation to the history of adornment. "Calder created over 2,000 pieces of jewelry over the course of his career, many of them as gifts for friends and relatives. Several pieces reflect Calder's fascination with art from Africa and other continents. They were mostly made of brass and steel, with bits of ceramic, wood and glass. Calder rarely used solder; when he needed to join strips of metal, he linked them with loops, bound them with snippets of wire or fashioned rivets. Calder created his first pieces in 1906 at the age of eight for his sister's dolls using copper wire that he found in the street." (For more information, see: Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan (December 11, 2008), "The Intimate Side of Alexander Calder" published in the Wall Street Journal).
