Der Gestapo gelang es trotz wenig Personal, zwischen 1938 und 1945 Widerstandsgruppen aus sämtlichen politischen Lagern aufzuspüren, zu unterwandern und zu zerschlagen. Wie war dies möglich? Durch den systematischen Einsatz von Sp…itzeln, die teils freiwillig, teils unter massivem Zwang mit der Gestapo kooperierten. Widerstand und Verrat waren in der NS-Ära unauflöslich miteinander verknüpft. An dieser Erkenntnis wird sich jede ernsthafte zukünftige Forschung über den Widerstand unter dem NS-Regime orientieren müssen. Auf der Grundlage langjähriger Recherchen in österreichischen, deutschen und russischen Archiven dokumentiert und analysiert Schafranek die immense und lange Zeit unterschätzte Bedeutung von V-Leuten vor allem in Österreich, aber auch in anderen Gebieten des Deutschen Reiches. Sie drangen in antifaschistische Widerstandsgruppen ein und infiltrierten diese mitunter jahrelang. Die Unterwanderung erreichte kaum vorstellbare Dimensionen, wie etwa die Gründung eines von der Wiener Gestapo 1942 geschaffenen »Zentralkomitees« der KPÖ, dem neben einigen »echten« KP-Sympathisanten von Beginn an drei V-Leute angehörten, zeigt.
