Anhand neuer Quellen erhellt Antje Scherner minutiös die Entstehungsgeschichte des Kapellenraums von seinen bescheidenen Anfängen bis zu den aufwendigen Planungen der Schlussphase. Neben der Ausstattung und ihrem Hintergrund in den künstlerischen und politis…chen Entwicklungen Roms widmet sie sich vor allem dem Konzeptwandel der römischen Reliefskulptur des späten 17. Jahrhunderts, ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit den vorherrschenden kunsttheoretischen Positionen und dem Einfluss der Akademiewettbewerbe auf die Gattung des Historienreliefs. Im barocken Rom erlebten römische Privat- und Familienkapellen eine beispiellose Aufwandssteigerung, mit der die Bauherren im Dienste von Religion und familiärem Sozialprestige Glanzpunkte in den oftmals schlichteren Kirchenräumen setzten. Die Bevorzugung von Marmorskulpturen gegenüber der bisherigen Malerei ist dabei eine der hervorstechenden Entwicklungen. Die Kapelle im Palazzo del Monte di Pietà (1639-1730), des römischen Pfandleihhauses, wurde eines der ehrgeizigsten dieser Kapellenprojekte im römischen Hoch- und Spätbarock. Bunte Marmorverkleidungen, vergoldeter Stuck und szenische Medaillons im Gewölbe verbinden sich mit Nischenfiguren und großformatigen Historienreliefs zu einer Raumausstattung, deren Wirkung fast allein von der Skulptur getragen wird. Unter ihnen gehören die drei Marmorreliefs von Guidi, Théodon und Legros zu Meisterwerken ihrer Gattung. Doch die Homogenität dieser Kapellenausstattung täuscht. Sie war das Ergebnis einer komplizierten Planungsgeschichte, die von Projektwechseln, Unterbrechungen und expandierenden Ansprüchen bestimmt war, aber auch von dem Einfluss mächtiger Bruderschaftsleiter, die Neuerungen aus anderen Ausstattungsvorhaben in ihre Bruderschaftskapelle übertrugen. Auf diese Weise wurde die Kapelle zu einem Spiegel jeweils neuester Entwicklungen im römischen Barock. Studie behandelt im Rahmen einer Monographie vor allem drei Aspekte, die sich aufgrund der Forschungs- und Quellenlage als vordringlich erweisen: die Baugeschichte der Kapelle, ihr Bildprogramm und die Reliefausstattung als eine für das spätere 17.
