Herman Hecht (1923-1985) was born into a Jewish fa…mily on 11th April 1923 in Bingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Hecht came to England in 1939 and was briefly interned in 1940 as a category C enemy alien. After studying at Leeds and Chelsea schools of art he worked for many years as personal assistant to Hans Schleger and in advertising and design studios. He married Ann Cave in 1957 after meeting at a graphics studio where both worked. Hecht ran his own design studio from 1958-1964. In 1964 he took up a position as a graphic design lecturer at Croydon College of Art, later becoming the Senior Lecturer and Course Director for the College's Department of Graphic Design. Hecht continued to produce work on a freelance basis as well as writing and lecturing on design. A magic lantern and slide collector and writer and early cinema enthusiast, Hecht undertook extensive research in preparation for a reference volume on pre-cinema history and inventions to 1896. His work was nearing completion when he died suddenly in 1985, aged 62. Signed by Author(s).

Thumbed and pap…er rippling. Ann Hecht (née Cave) (1929- ) was born in Reading, Berkshire on 15 January 1929. She trained in London as a graphic designer. She married Hermann Hecht in 1957 after meeting at a graphics studio where both worked. After marriage she became a weaver and expert in Guatemalan textiles. She taught weaving, spinning and dyeing in adult education for a number of years and produced several books on the subject, as well as designing and producing the Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. After Hermann Hecht's sudden death in 1985 she completed and edited the volume he had been working on, Pre-Cinema History: an Encyclopaedia and Annotated Bibliography of the Moving Image before 1896 , which was published in 1993.

It shows the routes of London Underground in a geographical layout, and not in the diagrammatic 'Beck' format used for the smaller pocket maps from 1933. This map was produced just before the beginning of…the Second World War and used a design that had already been in use for a number of years. **OCLC** lists no holdings of the 1939 map and one holding of the 1938 edition. Very Good. Crisp with folds and a few tiny holes at some corners.

Original vintage advertising poster for the Liberty Finmar Fair exhibition held at the department store in London from 9-25 October on the Fourth Floor featuring a great mid-century design by the notable graphic designer Zero (Hans Schleger; 1898-1976) of white and yellow brush strokes forming the shape of a tree on a black back…ground with small decorative stars and the bold title text below, the L for Liberty also made up of small stars. Organised by the importer of Nordic design, the annual Finmar Fair was a promotional event held at Liberty's in London during the 1960s showcasing modern Scandinavian furniture, textiles, glassware and other contemporary pieces, including those by the Finnish architect and designer Aalto (Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto; 1898-1976). Good condition, restored paper loss in top right corner, restored tears, creasing, backed on linen. Size: 75x51cm. Zero (Hans Schleger) (illustratore).

BEA British European Airways was a British airline operating services within the UK and to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East from 1946 to 1974 when it merged with BOAC to form British Airways. Original vintage poster published for The Highway Code exhibition organised by the Ministry of Transport and held in the ticket hall at Charing Cross London Underground station from 15 November to 10 December. Fantastic surreal illustration by the notable graphic designer Zero (Hans Schleger; 1898-1976) of a family with two chil…dren walking with the mother and boy in front featuring giant eyes in place of their faces and father and girl behind featuring ears in the place of their faces, the text below in stylised black and blue letters. The Highway Code was first published in 1931; the Ministry of Transport (1919-1941), reorganised and renamed during the 20th century, became the Department for Transport in 2002. Printed in Great Britain by Waterlow & Sons Limited, London and Dunstable. Fair condition, staining, tears and restored paper losses on corners, backed on linen. Size: 101.5x63cm. Designed by Henry Harry Beck. Printed by Johnson Riddle Co for London Transport. 22.7cm x 15.3cm. Card bi-fold pocket map. HC Beck Mainline interchange station map to the rear. Condition: excellent withsome wear to folds but otherwise a nice example.The 1938 No.1 pocket map came just 5 years after Harry Becks revolutionary diagr…am was first issued in 1933 and is the last of Becks 1st series of diagrams (more on that below).Having initially rejected Harry Becks design in 1931 on the grounds of being too revolutionary, the Underground Group Publicity Department tentatively published Becks map in January 1933 - to overwhelming enthusiasm from the public. The first distinct series of pocket maps by HC Beck ran from 1933-1938, all strikingly similar to the 1933 edition with their rich blue borders and evolving subtly with each iteration.This 1938 No. 1 is an identical reissue of 1937 No. 2 edition which saw the rather perplexing change of the Metropolitan Line colour to the same as the District line (Green). This Met would remain green until 1949 when it was returned to maroon, the colour it is on todays map.Much to Becks surprise and frustration, London Transport published an Underground pocket map by another designer, Hans Schleger later in 1938. Whilst Beck continued to design the map in poster formats, Schlegers pocket map ran for 2 years until responsibility for it returned to Beck in 1941.

1940 An original Vintage LONDON UNDERGROUND LINES Folding Pocket Map published by Johnson, Riddle Co Ltd, London on behalf of London Transport. Size approx 23cm x 15.5cm with 2 folds as issued. Condition is excellent.This edition of the Underground map is by Hans Schleger (who went under the pseudoynm of Zero). The lines are all… shown in the same colour. Highgate Station is noted as from summer 1940 only. The map continues to show as under construction the New Works Plan (Northern Heights project) to take over the ex-GNR line between Finsbury Park and Edgware and High Barnet, including the Alexandra Palace branch. These were to be incorporated into the Northern Line with a new connection with the Northern City line at Finsbury Park, and an extension from Edgware to Bushey Heath. The project was abandoned at the onset of World War 2 and never restarted, though these lines continued to be shown as under construction until 1950. The Central Line extension to the west is shown as being under construction as far as Denham (though it eventually was only completed as far as West Ruislip), and to Ongar in the east. The map includes the Middle Circle, an underground train line using the West London Railway between Latimer Road and Earls Court, passing through Uxbridge Road and Addison Road. The line closed in 1940 following bomb damage. It was not reopened until 2008 as part of the Overground network. Hans Schleger (1898-1976). In 1932, he moved to England, continuing to work for Crawfords. He became an integral part of Londons early 1930s avant-garde design community, and helped spread the aesthetics and philosophy of modernism in Britain.Among his most well known work is the London Transport bus-stopsign, which was commissioned in 1935 by Frank Pick, and is still in use today, largely unchanged from the original.In 1939 he became a naturalized British citizen, and during World War IIdesigned posters for the War Officeand Ministry for Food, and for the London Passenger Transport Board, including posters for the Dig for Victoricampaign.His work was included in the Britain Can Make Itexhibition held at the Victoria Albert Museumin London in 1946.

1940 A fine exampe of this rare original vintage London Underground Map designed by Hans Schleger. Overall size approx 23cm x 15.5cm. Condition is generally good with some minor signs of wear.This edition of the Underground map is by Hans Schleger (who went under the pseudoynm of Zero). The lines are all shown in the same brown…colour with a light blue border. This map does not have the blue airbrush background from the 1939 edition. Mainline stations are indicated by a light blue triangle, and the Bakerloo line extension to Stanmore is open. On the reverse of the map are four maps of Central London with the Underground Stations marked by a cross. Highgate Station is noted as from summer 1940 only. The map continues to show as under construction the New Works Plan (Northern Heights project) to take over the ex-GNR line between Finsbury Park and Edgware and High Barnet, including the Alexandra Palace branch. 1939 LONDON UNDERGROUND MAP No 1 by Hans Schleger. A fine example of the Schleger design of the London Underground pocket map which saw 6 print runs between 1938-1940, this being the 2nd map and the being No 2 1938.Designed by Hans Zero Schleger. Printed by Johnson Riddle Co Ltd for London Transport. Number 1 1939. Measures appr…ox22.7cm x 15.3cm (folded). Condition: Very good with some minor wear.HC Becks revolutionary diagram was published in January 1933 and ran until 1938, evolving subtly over this period. However, in 1938 Beck was unexpectedly confronted with a proof by another hand - that of Hans Schleger. In a furious letter to Christian Barman (Publicity Officer) Beck wrote I have just happened to see a proof of a new Underground folder. The HC Beck diagram has been used but with considerable and, I suggest, undesirable alterations by another artist without reference to me. Fortunately, Barman shared Becks view and agreed to revert to Becks design when next reprinted. However, this design ran until 1940 seeing 6 print runs.Though clearly based on the Beck diagram, the thinner lines, thicker interchange stations and use of airbrush techniques gives the map an altogether different feel. In another strange move all LU brand devices have been removed including the roundel logo. Hans Schleger (who signed his work Zero) was a highly accomplished artist and designer in the avant garde style with a mastery in airbrush techniques. He worked with London Transport, designing mainly posters between 1935-1947. In 1959, Schleger was made a Royal Designer for Industry.

1939 LONDON UNDERGROUND MAP No 3by Hans Schleger.This edition of the Underground map designed by Hans Schleger (who went under the pseudoynm of Zero) shows the completion of the Northern line between Archway and East Finchley. Highgate Station is noted as being open from summer 1940 only. On the reverse of the map are two maps o…f Central London and details of future extensions. The map has an airbrushed background which emphasises the central area. Authorised extensions are included as a dotted line as used for the Central line extensions to Denham and Ongar, the extensions on the Northern line to Bushey Heath, High Barnet and Alexandra Palace and the Bakerloo extension to Stanmore. The District and Piccadilly lines to Hounslow West are horizontal, as is the Central line to Ealing Broadway. The Metropolitan line is shown as far as Aylesbury with the branch to Chesham. The GWR and LMS line between Uxbridge Road and Willesden Junction are included, as is the Waterloo City Railway. The front cover is red with a small black roundel.The map shows as under construction the New Works Plan (Northern Heights project) to take over the ex-GNR line between Finsbury Park and Edgware and High Barnet, including the Alexandra Palace branch.
