Sie brechen Zinn- und Silbererz aus dem Berg Potosi und kauen ununterbroeben die Blätter des Kokastrauehes, um Hunger, Durst und Ersehöpfung zu betäuben. Dann gelangen die Autoren in das Zentrum des ehemaligen Inkareiches. Was die Spanier nieht zerstörten, fiel Erdbeben und jenen zum Opfer, die in der jüngsten Zeit aus den erhalten gebliebenen Palästen und Festungen billiges Baumaterial brachen. Dennoch zeugen die Reste von einer Teehnik, vor der sich aueh der an Wolkenkratzer gewöhnte Zeitgenosse voller Ehrfureht verbeugt; denn diese Bauten geben selbst dem Fachmann Rätsel auf, die bis heute nicht gelöst werden konnten.
