Auf dieser Straße zogen vor rund viereinhalb Jahrhunderten die Söldner Pizarros im Namen Roms und Madrids, im Namen des Kreuzes und der Zivilisation, mordend und räubernd durch das Land und unterwarfen der spanisehen Krone fast den ganzen Kontinent. Wo einst die blühenden Städte und Siedlungen der Inkas frohe und gesunde Menschen beherbergten, herrseht heute Hunger und Not. Eine der großartigsten und ältesten Kulturen der Mensehheit, die Kultur der Inkas, sank unter dem Anprall der goldgierigen Konquistadoren in Trümmer und Staub. Die beiden Autoren verstehen es, spannend und lebendig die Vergangenheit und die Gegenwart der südamerikanisehen Länder zu sehildern, die sie auf ihrer Reise berührt haben: Mendoza, die Perle am Fuß der Anden, das Weinzentrum des Kontinents. In riesigen Betonbehältern, die bis zu einer Million Liter fassen, lagert das Traubenblut. Eine einzige Kelterei liefert mehr als zwölf Millionen Liter Wein im Monat. Dann folgt San Juan. Vor wenigen Jahren erst zerstörte ein furchtbares Erdbeben große Teile der Stadt, und noch immer schwebt das Grauen über den Trümmern, lastet es auf den Menschen, die sich um den Wiederaufbau bemühen. Danach beginnt der schwerste Teil der Strecke. Mühsam kämpft sieh der Tatra auf schmalen Straßen und durch lebensgefährliche Kurven die Andenhänge hinauf. Hier beginnt das Reieh der Bergindianer, unterdrückter, von Armut und Elend zerbroehener Menschen. Sie schuften auf den Feldern weißer Grundbesitzer und verdienen in ihrem ganzen Leben nieht genug, um sich ein Paar Schuhe kaufen zu können. Sie brechen Zinn- und Silbererz aus dem Berg Potosi und kauen ununterbroeben die Blätter des Kokastrauehes, um Hunger, Durst und Ersehöpfung zu betäuben. Dann gelangen die Autoren in das Zentrum des ehemaligen Inkareiches. Was die Spanier nieht zerstörten, fiel Erdbeben und jenen zum Opfer, die in der jüngsten Zeit aus den erhalten gebliebenen Palästen und Festungen billiges Baumaterial brachen. Dennoch zeugen die Reste von einer Teehnik, vor der sich aueh der an Wolkenkratzer gewöhnte Zeitgenosse voller Ehrfureht verbeugt; denn diese Bauten geben selbst dem Fachmann Rätsel auf, die bis heute nicht gelöst werden konnten.
