Di…e Legende von der avantgardistischen Innovation zu analysieren, bedeutet folglich, sie zu zerstoeren. Den Anstoss dazu gab die Avantgarde selbst mit der Layoutierung ihrer eigenen Vorgeschichte. Geschichtsdiagramme, fuer die es bislang keinen rechten Begriff, geschweige denn ein bildwissenschaftliches Bewusstsein gab, die jedoch das latente Spannungsverhaeltnis zwischen Tradition und Erneuerung vermitteln, bilden das Ausgangsmaterial fuer diese Untersuchung. Gemeint sind Kunststammbaeume. Bei dieser Bildgattung handelt es sich um genealogische Konstruktionen, mit denen Kuenstler wie Historiker unsere Ansicht und unser Urteilsvermoegen ueber den Verlauf der Kunst nachhaltig praegten. Ihre ikonische Festschreibung von konsekutiven Epochen und ihre diagrammatische Verortung der Maler und Bildhauer brachten System in den Ablauf der Geschichte. Anhand von Verzweigungssystemen machten sie den Verlauf der Entwicklungen anschaulich und setzten zum besseren Verstaendnis abstrakte Schautafeln und Graphen ein. Mit dem Kunststammbaum als der uebergeordneten Kategorie eines heterogenen Phaenomens ist also einerseits ein historiographischer Ordnungstypus und andererseits ein Herleitungsmodel in der Art eines Filiationsnachweises gemeint. In den genealogischen Neuordnungen der Vergangenheit kommt das wechselnde Selbstverstaendnis der Moderne exemplarisch zum Ausdruck. Schon aus diesem Grund ist der Kunststammbaum ein bemerkenswertes Symptom fuer avanciertes Geschichtsbewusstsein. How has the history of art been made visible, and how is it made visible today? Family trees, diagrams, tables-this book by Astrit Schmidt-Burkhardt looks at the subject from the nineteenth century to today. This book also destroys a legend: the legend of the radical break in tradition that the avantgarde of the twentieth century claimed for itself. This idea was so widely and unequivocally accepted that the category of thinking that it encapsulated has remained unchallenged to this day. Art family trees are genealogical constructions by means of which artists and historians have exerted a lasting influence on the way we perceive and judge the history of art. Their iconical notation of consecutive epochs and diagrammatic positioning of artists brought order to the course of history. The use of a system of branches made it easier to consider complex issues, and so enabled new insights. Bei dieser Bildgattung handelt es sich um genealogische Konstruktionen, mit denen Künstler wie Historiker unsere Ansicht und unser Urteilsvermögen über den Verlauf der Kunst nachhaltig prägten. Ihre ikonische Festschreibung von konsekutiven Epochen und ihre diagrammatische Verortung der Maler und Bildhauer brachten System in den Ablauf der Geschichte. Anhand von Verzweigungssystemen machten sie den Verlauf der Entwicklungen anschaulich und setzten zum besseren Verständnis abstrakte Schautafeln und Graphen ein. Mit dem Kunststammbaum als der übergeordneten Kategorie eines heterogenen Phänomens ist also einerseits ein historiographischer Ordnungstypus und andererseits ein Herleitungsmodel in der Art eines Filiationsnachweises gemeint.
