Gaspar Schott was a German Jesuit and scientist, specializing in the fields of physics, mathematics and natural philosophy. He taught mathematics and physics at Mainz and Würzburg. During the last years of his life, he decided to publish the material he had collected on scientific subjects both from his own researches and those of others. He produced in eight years (1658-1666) eleven books. The Anatomia physico-hydrostatica is on the ?origin of springs. His own opinion, when finally expressed, amounted to saying that everyone was right: some springs are due to precipitation, some to underground condensation, and some connected directly to the sea? [BECAUSE OF ABE SIZE LIMITATIONS,OUR COMPLETE COLLATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THIS BOOK COULD NOT BE PRINTED HERE. PLEASE EMAIL FOR A COPY OF THAT VERY COMPLETE AND EXHAUSTIVE DESCRIPTION OF THESE TWO LOVELY VOLUMES.]With innume…rable printed illustrations and tables throughout the text. The Organum Mathematicum was an information device or teaching machine invented by the Jesuit polymath and scholar, Athanasius Kircher, in the middle of the 17th century. The first published description of the Organum Mathematicum came in this book by Gaspar Schott, who was Kircher's pupil. The book includes excerpts from Kircher's original manual. There are no surviving Organums which closely resemble the device illustrated in Schott's book, but there are three known devices, likely of Jesuit manufacture, which contain essentially the same content. The Organum device - containing approximately twenty-four rods - is described in Schott's book by their functions, separated into nine main "books". Contemporary green boards with handwritten spine labels for the author title and for old library classification. Minor professional repairs have been done to the edges and tips of the bindings. From the private library of Michel'angelo Lambertini (small label on the inside front cover of both volumes). With an occasional older faint library stamp in blue ink (an oval 1¼" wide). The covers are worn (see photo) and the pages are lightly browned throughout, but overall this is a lovely copy of this early seminal work on building a "knowledge machine." A student of Athanase Kircher at the University of Würzburg and then his collaborator in Rome, the Jesuit Gaspard Schott (1608-1666) showed his interest in science and machinery very early on. Back at the University of Wurzburg, he made known the knowledge accumulated by Kircher, and his fame spread. He popularized the discoveries of Guericke, Torricelli and Boyle on the void, and corresponded in particular with Huygens. His major works, including his "Technica curiosa", "are huge, uncritical collections, mines of quaint information in which significant nuggets must be extracted from a great deal of dross. Like many of his time, Schott believed that the principles of nature and art are best revealed in their exceptions. This make him a useful source on the history of scientific instruments and mechanical technology" (DSB, XII, 211). According to Backer, "most of Father Schott's works are curious, and they were once much sought after; we find there valuable observations, experiments worthy of attention, which have put physicists on the path to more than one discovery" (Backer , I, 727). The present work "is a complete collection of physics experiments carried out up to that time. In the first two books, Father Schott gives an account of the experiments carried out in Magdeburg by Otto dde Guericke, and in England, by Rob. Boyle on air and on vacuum. He treats, in the next two, of various experiments with mercury; the fifth and sixth books contain the description of a large number of remarkable machines; the seventh is filled with details on universal polygraphy by Father Kircher, work in which this learned Jesuit proposes a writing common to all the peoples of the earth; on occult and marvelous writings; on stenography; on the origin of both Roman numerals and those we call Arabic ; on the origin of different kinds of writing, etc.; the tenth, of di.

Kupfertafeln, Schweinsldr. d.Zt. mit 2 Schließen; wenige Wurmlöcher in Buchdeckel; feines Expl. Second edition of the famous collection of technical experiments, including v. Guericke's celebr…ated experiments on vacuums at Magdeburg. With engr. title, portrait and 59 engraved plates! Little browning and foxing, brownish stain to outer margin of 2nd part, notice of dedication to title page; plate 16 of 1st part with small torn away corner, some tears to folding plate 17; lacking the half-title. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards with 2 brass clasps; some worming to covers. This famous encyclopedia of technical knowledge is especially important for its description of Otto von Guericke's fundamentally important experiments with the vacuum-pump and the celebrated Magdeburg Hemispheres, illustrated in a fine folding plate. The first book with 29 chapters "Mirabilia Magdeburgica" (pp.1-86,7 plates) is entirely devoted to the description of Guericke's experiments communicated to Schott in Letters, some of which are published here for the first time in the first edition 1664. Guericke did not published his famous book before 1672. Other subjects are treated as follows: Robert Boyle's experiment with the air pump. Toricelli's and others' experiments with mercury vacua; hydro-pneumatique experiments; mechanical marvels; secret writing; problems in cyclometry; the treatise "Mirabilia chronometrica" gives the first description of a universal joint and a classification of gear teeth" (Norman); perpetual motion,; miscellaneous marvels. The volume also contains one of the earliest accounts of the DIVING BELL with a fine engraved plate. This work is furthermore an interesting bridge between the new scientific knowledge of the time, and ancient lore, by virtue of its section on cabalistic writing and astrology. Caspar Schott (1608-66) Jesuit, student and assistant of Athanasius Kircher. During the last years of his life he decided to publish the mass of material he had collected on scientific subjects both from his own researches and those of others. He produced in a period of eight years (1658-1666) eleven books. He taught mathematics and physics at Mainz and Würzburg. He ".yearned for the intellectual delights of Rome, and after twenty-five years in Italy he suffered from German winters and had to have his own hypocaust installed.Exhausted, it is said, by overwork on his books, he died in 1666." DSB XII,211 "Encumbered by Schott's taste for the supernatural, his works contain much useful knowledge, descriptions of scientific instruments and mechanical technology. Pergamino, lomo rotulado. Buen ejemplar. [Ref. C2N901].

Half-title, title printed title in red and black with the engraved portrait of t…he dedicatee on the verso, and his engraved arms on p. (x), the last leaf is a list of Schott?s published works. Some foxing (mostly light, but a few gatherings and plates heavily foxed). Contemporary mottled calf (rather rubbed, upper joint split but held by the cords). Bookplate of the Royal Meteorological Society. FIRST EDITION. This work is a huge compilation of scientific instruments, mechanical technology, and physical curiosities, in fact every aspect of anything technical that Schott could discover. Book I is devoted to Guericke?s work on the air pump and vacuum, Book II describes Boyle?s work on air pumps, Book IX gives the first description of a universal joint, and Book XI describes new mirrored optical instruments and Balthasar Conrad?s developments of the manufacture of spherical lenses. It includes a very full survey of the history of diving apparatus, a large section on clocks and clockwork, and much else. It gives a very comprehensive account of the state of technology up to the beginning of the Scientific Revolution. As with most of Schott?s works, it is richly illustrated.
