This quotation illustrates the problem of the classification of the English tense system on which the focus of this paper will be based. Although linguists' knowledge of the tense system has increased over the years, the problem is that, as Robin Lakoff wrote, they 'cannot account for many ways in which tenses are used in English' (Binnick 1991: vii). Therefore, English tense(s) have not yet been understood completely. By comparing different authors and frameworks, this paper will present different approaches to the English tense system. The aim is not to provide a perfect solution to all answers but to introduce different viewpoints and to go a step beyond the common conceptualization of the English language by presenting competing theories.

Dabei soll die Frage im Vordergrund stehen, ob eine Unterscheidung von Menschen und Androiden überhaupt möglich ist, beziehungsweise wie sie vorgenommen werden kann: Human beings in science-fiction films have already lost their uniqueness to robots, androids, and cyborgs. Replicants - genetically engineered androids were touted as 'more human than human' by their corporate creators in [.] Blade Runner, and the film's contrast between dejected humans resigned to a dreary existence dictated by corporate greed and the replicants' passionate intensity proves the motto depressingly true. (Springer 1999: 203, zit. nach Trischak 2002)Trotzdem ist das charakteristische, distinktive Merkmal der Menschen ihre eigene Identität, die sich aus Erinnerungen und Gefühlen sowie der Möglichkeit der Selbstreflexion zusammensetzt. Hannah Arendt, eine zentrale Denkerin des 20. Jahrhunderts, die selbst durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg und die Studentenbewegung geprägt wurde, differenziert folglich zwischen den Begriffen Macht und Gewalt. Diese Unterscheidung und ihre Definition von Macht sind in der Politischen Theorie jedoch nicht unumstritten:Unter den Begriffen, mit denen Basisphänomene unserer Gesellschaft bezeichnet werden, ist der Begriff der Macht besonders unklar und kontrovers. Die Vielzahl von Versuchen, Macht genauer und möglichst ultimativ zu bestimmen, hat zu immer neuen Anläufen geführt und bleibt im Ergebnis so unabgeschlossen wie eh und je. (Göhler 2011: 224)In dieser Hausarbeit soll versucht werden, das theoretische Machtkonzept von Hannah Arendt zu beschreiben und zu analysieren. Diese normative Theorie ist besonders interessant, weil Arendt von einem produktiven und kommunikativen Machtbegriff ausgeht sowie Macht und Gewalt unterscheidet und sie sich damit gegen bereits existierende, repressive Machtbegriffe beispielsweise von Max Weber stellt. Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei die Frage, was passiert, wenn Macht und Gewalt im Rahmen von Revolutionen direkt aufeinandertreffen, wenn Herrscher Macht um jeden Preis, mit aller Gewalt, erhalten wollen - ist die Arendt'sche Theorie in diesem Fall noch anwendbar Reichen ihre Überlegungen für die Erklärung von zwei praktischen Beispielen aus diesem Kontext aus Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, werden in dieser Hausarbeit zunächst die theoretischen Ideen von Hannah Arendt zu den zentralen Begriffen Macht und Gewalt untersucht sowie mit den Auffassungen von anderen bedeutenden Denkern wie Voltaire und Weber verglichen. Anschließend werden diese theoretischen Erkenntnisse auf zwei reelle Beispiele aus dem aktuellen Konflikt in Ägypten, der Teil des Arabischen Frühlings ist und es mittlerweile ausreichend zuverlässige Dokumentationen der Geschehnisse vor Ort gibt, anzuwenden. Anhand dieser Analyse kann kritisch geprüft werden, inwiefern Arendts Überlegungen zutreffen und in welchen Fällen Lücken oder Widersprüche in ihrer Argumentation auftreten. Schließlich werden alle zentralen Erkenntnisse in einem Fazit zusammengefasst, eine abschließende Bewertung des Arendtschen Machtbegriffs vorgenommen und ein Ausblick über offen gebliebene Fragen gegeben.

The first work is a memoir of the German educator and author, Bernhard Heinrich Overberg…translated from its original German into English. He was a key player in the reformation of schools during the late eighteenth, early nineteenth century. The second work to this book is a critical work on the schools in Geneva by J a Dufour. The third work is a work on the purpose of popular education by Marc Viridet. The fourth work is a further essay on the council of education and has been translated from the original German, with no indication of author or translator. The fifth and final work to this book is an English title by Henry George Watkins and discusses the alternates to a formal education and gives advice to apprentices engaged in trades or profession. Watkins' view is that 'the sooner young people begin to be instructed in some honest trade it is better for them'. Watkins praises the apprenticeship and this method of education. The first four works are in French with the fifth and final work in English. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, very smart with patches of minor rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Light rubbing to the boards and some minor bumping to the extremities. Rear hinge has failed with the backstrip lifting from the text-block. Internally, firmly bound. Small tear to the title page of 'Considerations'. Pages to the first four works are bright with the pages to 'Affectionate Advice' being age toned due to paper used. Just the occasional light spots to pages. Good. None (illustratore). book.

This quotation illustrates the problem of the classification of the English tense system on which the focus of this paper will be based. Although linguists' knowledge of the tense system has increased over the years, the problem is that, as Robin Lakoff wrote, they 'cannot account for many ways in which tenses are used in English' (Binnick 1991: vii). Therefore, English tense(s) have not yet been understood completely. By comparing different authors and frameworks, this paper will present different approaches to the English tense system.
