Après des études de lettres, de philosophie, d'esthétique à l'Université de Stanford et à Harvard, puis à la Sorbonne et à Grenoble, il obtient en 1940 son doctorat à l'Université de Columbia, New Yor…k. Dès le début des années 40, il se consacre à la peinture et se lie d'amitié avec les surréalistes en exil, avec Léger et Mon-drian. Il participe en 1942 à l'Exposition surréaliste internationale, organisée à New York. Deux ans plus tard a lieu sa première exposition particulière chez Peggy Guggenheim, à la galerie "Art of This Century". Dès lors, il expose régulièrement en Europe comme en Amérique. Esprit ouvert, aux talents multiples, il a consacré une partie de son activité à l'enseignement, a dirigé plusieurs revues et publié une ½uvre critique et théorique considérable. De tous les peintres américains, Robert Motherwell est incontestablement celui qui est lié de la manière la plus étroite à la culture européenne. Pour le Bâtiment Est de la National Gallery de Washington, inauguré en 1978, Motherwell a réalisé une peinture murale monumentale: l'Elégie de la Réconciliation, précieux aboutissement d'une longue série d'Elégies espagnoles créées à partir de la fin des années 40 et dont le peintre a dit qu'elles "sont un essai de mise en symbole d'une image subjective de l'Espagne moderne. Toutes sont en noir et blanc: ce sont des images mortuaires, des lamentations, des hymnes funèbres, des chants de deuil - austères et barbares." A travers de nombreux documents et avec la collaboration directe du peintre, cet ouvrage retrace la genèse et l'élaboration de cette ½uvre capitale qu'est YElégie de la Réconciliation. L'étude de E.A. Carmean Jr., fruit d'une grande familiarité avec l'½uvre de Motherwell, éclaire, chemin faisant, de manière significative les réalisations majeures de l'artiste et sa philosophie personnelle de l'art.
