Following the example of his elder brother, Felix, Thomas Platter left Basle to study medicine in Montpellier for his baccalaureat. He was a child of his father's old age and there was a difference of forty years between the sojourns of the two brother in Montpellier. In the interaval, much of the town had been dsestroyed in the religious wars and the protestant faction had gained power. He describes in detail the way in which the citizens lived and how they were governed. The period was cruel and intolerant and suffused with the uncertain atmosphere of temporary peace, a hiatus before another war. Thomas looked everywhere and reported what he saw honestly and without prejudice. In 1599, he returned to Basle a qualified bachelor of medicine and became one of the town's most noted physicians. His journal, a contemporary view of a university town rousing from the Middle Ages, is a document of great historical importance. Illustrated. 275 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
