"Originaire de Toul, Jean Raulin (né vers 1443 - mort en 1515) étudia la théologie au Collège de Navarre à Paris et obtint en 1479 le doctorat. Il devint l…e Grand Maître du Collège en 1481. On le considérait comme un des principaux chefs de l'école nominaliste, mais aussi comme un prédicateur populaire ardent à montrer la nécessité de la réforme des m?urs et de l'Église. À la fin de mai 1497, il entra au prestigieux monastère de Cluny dont il devint à l'âge d'environ cinquante-cinq ans un éminent novice. (?) Dans sa Collatio de perfecta religionis plantatione?, Raulin exhorte les moines de Cluny à retrouver la règle de saint Benoît en des termes qui sont habituellement réservés à l'Écriture elle-même : elle est « la pierre où se sont abreuvés nos pères » (f.b IV v°), on ne peut s'en dispenser d'un seul iota (b IV r°) : seul ce retour à la source permettra d'enlever le ridicule attaché actuellement au nom de moine, puisque les abbayes sont plus des cavernes de voleurs que des maisons de prière (b III r°). On trouve, dans la correspondance de Raulin, la même doctrine de réforme par le retour aux vertus monastiques : chasteté du corps, « abstinence » de l'esprit, dévotion, paix et concorde, obéissance (lettre aux frères de Saint-Alban de Bâle), ou plus simplement « la pauvreté et la charité » (à l'abbé de Cluny, Volumen epistolarum, f. 40v°)" (Dictionnaire de spiritualité, tome 13, col. 154).
