Esto hace que los profesionales sanitarios, las instituciones o los pacientes no lleguen a implicarse de forma tan activa como en otras patologías crónicas. La obesidad no es una opción de vida, ni tampoco debe considerarse solo un factor de riesgo que puede producir o agravar otras enfermedades. Afecta a más de una cuarta parte de la población de los países desarrollados y sigue creciendo de forma imparable en todo el mundo. Reconocerla como enfermedad crónica recidivante es un importante punto de partida para destinar esfuerzos y recursos, y debe abordarse como una enfermedad controlable que requiere una atención de por vida.
