(1 engraved frontispiece), (22), 541, (25) pp. Title-page printed in red & black. With index on the subjects of the sermons. 4to. 21x17 cm. Contemporary calf with raised bands and gilt decorated spine, edges and lettering. Edges red. Nice copy. Latin edition of forty sermons by the famous Italian Jesuit preacher P. Segneri (1624-1694). He had with great success preached for and lived with the poor peasants but because of his fame was appointed, much to his regret, theologian at the pompous papal court. "Since Savonarola there had been no one more influential on the masses by preaching than Segneri" His Sermons were published for the first time in Italian 1679 as 'Il Quaresimale' and together with 'La Manna' they are considered his most important works. (Michaud, Biogr. Univ., vol 41, p. 450; cfr. Bio-Bibl. Kirchenlexikon, Bd. IX). His writings were recommended to students because of their clarity and precision as he deliberately avoided ornamental language. They were translated in many languages; of the Sermones alone there are 85 different editions. See: Sommervogel VII (1894) 1050-1089; Hurter II, p. 546v.; Heitjan, Bencard 1176. 1 US copy of this edition in OCLC. Old name and small stamp on first free endpaper, endpaper loosening. (16), 1-1015 (pp. 961-968 misnumbered 991-998), (80, 4 indices) pp. 4to. Contemporary calf with raised bands and gilt decorated edges and spine; edges red. IHS-vignette on title-page. With frontispiece engraving (depicting the manna coming from heaven) by I.M. Gutwein. Fine copy. - Paulo Segneri, Italian Jesuit, preacher, missionary, ascetical writer, was born at Nettuno and died at Rome 1694. By a careful study of Scripture, the Fathers, and the Orations of Cicero, he had prepared himself for the pulpit, for which he had ever felt a strong attraction. He preached at first in the great cathedrals, and then for twenty-seven years (1665-92) gave popular missions with an eloquence surpassed only by his holiness. After St. Bernadine of Siena and Savanarola, Segneri was Italy's greatest orator. Entire districts flocked to hear him; extraordinary graces and favours marked his career. This work contains devotional excercices and is intended as a meditation manual - food for the soul - for every day of the year. It was first published 1673-80 in Bologna in 4 volumes as 'La manna dell'anima', this is the second (or third?) Latin edition (first 1699). Segneri's writings, translations and excepts included, comprise some 600 titles, of which 70 versions of La Manna dell'anima alone, one of the main works, in more than 300 volumes. Surprisingly we only find 1 copy of this edition in OCLC; 7 copies in German KvK. Small stamp and name on first fly-leaf. Cf. Michaud, Biogr. Univ., vol 41, p. 450; Bio-Bibl. Kirchenlexikon, Bd. IX).
