Slight FOXING/slight BLOTCHING throughout some pages of volume. Rebound with original ornately impressed gilt decorated (but dulled/lightly rubbed) front board & spine & plain impressed decorated rear set onto new binding with darkened beige cloth showing to hinges & ends of spine which have losses to original binding. Heavy wear to corners or new binding with frays exposing card of underlayer, wear through to card at bottom edges in places. Ink presentation inscription dated 1856 to free end-paper. Gilt to all page-edges. Outstanding b/w illustrations within text. Slight blotching to a good percentage of pages, but text is otherwise nice & clean. Binding a little strained in places. Well used.

Beautifully bound in full, green morocco with raised bands and gilt decorations on the spine and front and rear covers. The name of the Trinity Church School, Springfield in gilt on the front cover. Very slight edge and corner wear. All edges are in gilt. No former owner's names in the book. Includes 100 illustrations. Interior of book is fairly clean with very light to moderate foxing. Book is very solid, square, and tight. Exterior and interior hinges are un-cracked. A handsome copy on the shelf.

Includes one of Ford Madox Brown's rare illustrations for Byron's Prisoner of Chillon [Goldman - Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870, p. 82]. In blue cloth binding over bevelled boards, richly decorated with gold leaf, design by John Sliegh, whose initials appear as part of the design at the base of spine. All edges gilt. xvi, 400pp. 8vo. An important volume in this history of English book illustration [See Gleeson White, English Illustration, --105-107.] (Boards worn, rubbed at edges, a little frayed at spine tips, still attractive volume). Previous owner's bookplate on front paste down, gift inscription dated 1866 on front free endpaper, with small bookseller's ticket indicating the volume was once retailed by Napper and Wright Stationers and Booksellers on New Street, Birmingham. Small ticket on rear paste down indicating the volume was bound by leading binders, Edmonds & Remnants, London. Pencil note on title page. Some spotting around gutters but otherwise neat, clean, bright and tight internally. All edges gilt with gauffering, marbled endpapers. Stated "Third Edition" on title page. Solid text block, lightly rubbed corners, sunned spine, faint foxing throughout. Bookplate of the Earl of Portsmouth affixed to front endpaper. A striking example.

An early edition of the work, with 1861 as the earliest record of its being published; the next new edition published in 1862.Scarce.In full morocco prize binding with gilt decorations, borders, title, and fore edges, as well as marbled pastedowns and marbled first free endpapers. Front pastedown bearing the bookseller and stationer's plate of Henry Wright Stationer & Bookseller, New Street, Birmingham which is illustrated with a coat of arms. Inscription to the second front free endpaper reads 'Frank W. Elkington, a Remembrance from Edwin Laundry Xmas. 1868.' Beautifully illustrated throughout with monochrome vignettes including a frontispiece drawn by Holman Hunt, though appears to be missing three illustrations by Harrison Weir intended to appear on pp. 78, 79; these are 'The Only One -- The Earth', 'The Only One -- The Air', and 'The Only One -- The Sea'. Engraved by The Brothers Dalziel, who started London's largest and most influential wood engraving firm in the Victorian period, a golden age of British illustration. This is a lovely anthology of English religious poetry by some of the greats, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning's 'The Weakest Thing', John Donne's 'Death', and John Milton's 'Morning Prayer in Paradise'. Selected, edited, and with contributions from Robert Aris Willmott, an English cleric and author. In full morocco binding with gilt decorations. Externally, boards smart with good colour and gilding bright, just the odd small mark or evidence of rubbing. Some dulling to the spine, and rubbing along the joints and to the raised bands which has resulted in loss of leather, as well as to the bottom fore edge. Slight bumping to corners. Marbled pastedowns and marbled free endpapers bright and clean. Front pastedown has bookseller and stationer's plate of Henry Wright Stationer & Bookseller, New Street, Birmingham illustrated with a coat of arms.
