Full bound red leather, faded on spine, but very strong front and rear covers with gilt design inlaid on both. Contents very clean throughout with outer edges in gilt though there is some foxing on endpapers. Very slight rubbing on corners which are a little exposed. Ex-libris label on inside cover with previous owner name and address. 630 pages.

Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but notes cannot obscure the text. An acceptable condition book with a gilt textblock edge and some colour illustrations. Edgewear and marks to the boards which are almost loose from the textblock and heavy loss along the spine. Binding is very fragile and page edges are lightly tanned and lightly marked. Overall an acceptable reading copy.

Original cloth with extensive gilt decoration, all page edges gilt. Edges of binding a bit worn, inner hinges strenghtened, some light foxing and traces of use, a few repairs, else in (very) good condition. Please see description or ask for photos.

Heavy wear to corners or new binding with frays exposing card of underlayer, wear through to card at bottom edges in places. Ink presentation inscription dated 1856 to free end-paper. Gilt to all page-edges. Outstanding b/w illustrations within text. Slight blotching to a good percentage of pages, but text is otherwise nice & clean. Binding a little strained in places. Well used.

Very slight edge and corner wear. All edges are in gilt. No former owner's names in the book. Includes 100 illustrations. Interior of book is fairly clean with very light to moderate foxing. Book is very solid, square, and tight. Exterior and interior hinges are un-cracked. A handsome copy on the shelf.

An early edition of the work, with 1861 as the earliest record of its being published; the next new edition published in 1862.Scarce.In full morocco prize binding with gilt decorations, borders, title, and fore edges, as well as marbled pastedowns and marbled first free endpapers. Front pastedown bearing the bookseller and stationer's plate of Henry Wright Stationer & Bookseller, New Street, Birmingham which is illustrated with a coat of arms. Inscription to the second front free endpaper reads 'Frank W. Elkington, a Remembrance from Edwin Laundry Xmas. 1868.' Beautifully illustrated throughout with monochrome vignettes including a frontispiece drawn by Holman Hunt, though appears to be missing three illustrations by Harrison Weir intended to appear on pp. 78, 79; these are 'The Only One -- The Earth', 'The Only One -- The Air', and 'The Only One -- The Sea'. Engraved by The Brothers Dalziel, who started London's largest and most influential wood engraving firm in the Victorian period, a golden age of British illustration. This is a lovely anthology of English religious poetry by some of the greats, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning's 'The Weakest Thing', John Donne's 'Death', and John Milton's 'Morning Prayer in Paradise'.
