Ein Buch für jeden Segelflieger von einst und jetzt, ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Luftfahrt-Geschichte! 1935 gründet Martin Schempp im Göppinger Städtischen Bauhof den Sportflugzeugbau Göppingen. Wolf Hirth ist Pate und steuert die Konstruktionen der Segelflugzeuge bei. Unter späterer Mitwirkung der Brüder Wolfgang und Ulrich Hütter entstehen bis Kriegsbeginn der kunstflugtaugliche Übungseinsitzer Göppingen Gö 1 »Wolf«, die berühmte Gö 3 »Minimoa« und der Doppelsitzer Gö 4. 1938 übernimmt Wolf Hirth die Hälfte des Kapitals, der ganze Betrieb zieht nach Kirchheim um und produziert nun 40 Jahre unter den weltweit angesehenen Namen Schempp-Hirth. Gleich zu Kriegsbeginn gründet Wolf Hirth seinen Versuchsbau in Nabern/ Teck, direkt am Flugplatz. Neben Materialuntersuchungen und Bauweisenforschung widmen sich die Betriebe bis Kriegsende der Konstruktion (überwiegend Nabern) und Fertigung (Kirchheim und Nabern) von über 400 Leitwerken für den Messerschmitt »Giganten« mit und ohne Motor, vielen 1000 Holzleitwerken für die Me 109, dem Erprobungsflugzeug Gö 9 für die spätere Dornier Do 335, Segelkunstflugzeugen »Habicht« mit 13,6 m Spannweite und den Prototypen des legendären Stummelhabichts mit 8 m und 6 m Spannweite. 1944/45 wird die Fertigung der Holzseitenruder der Me 262 vorbereitet, und Wolfgang Hütter beginnt den Musterbau des Fernaufklärers Hü 211 mit einem 22 m spannenden Holzschalenflügel. Wolf Hirth, der »Vater des Motorseglers«, kann trotz des Krieges seinen Hirth Hi 20 »MoSe« fertigstellen und mit der Klappluftschraube erproben. Nach einer Ausschreibung des RLM wird noch 1944 ein Doppelsitzer mit im Flug verstellbarer Tragflügelpfeilung eingeflogen. Nach Kriegsende versuchen beide Firmen mit Ausweichproduktionen, ihre Mitarbeiter weiterzubeschäftigen. In Nabern beginnt 1951 erneut der Segelflugzeugbau: Gö 4 III, Alfred Vogt's Lo 100 und Lo 150, Doppelraab. Auch ."
