Zu I: Erste Ausgabe. - "S. organisierte die erfolgreiche Beteiligung von S & H an der Londoner Weltausstellung 1851, bei der das Unternehmen für seine gezeigten Innovationen mit der 'Council Medal' ausgezeichnet wurde. Gleichzeitig bereitete S.…den Einstieg von S & H in das Geschäft mit Telegraphen-Seekabeln vor. im Rahmen der Verlegung eines Tiefseekabels zwischen Sardinien und Algerien (wurden sie) mit der Lieferung von Telegraphenapparaten und der Prüfung der Kabel selbst beauftragt. Damit war endgültig der Marktzugang gesichert, und S. eröffnete 1863 eine eigene Seekabelfabrik in Charlton bei Woolwich" (NDB). - Zu II: Erste Ausgabe. - Markham (1823-1888) arbeitete als Ingenieur für die Great Eastern Railway Company, bevor er eine Stelle als "Assistant Superintendant" bei der Midland Railway Company in Derby antrat. Dort entwickelte er ein Verfahren, das es ermöglichte, in den Lokomotiven Kohle statt Koks zu verfeuern, wodurch die Midland Railway Co. jedes Jahr Tausende von Pfund einsparen konnte, was besonders Joseph Paxton, einen der Direktoren, beeindruckte. - Ecken etwas bestoßen, sonst nahezu fleckenfrei und gut erhalten.

An den Maler Wilhelm Beckmann (1852-1942), der dafür geworben hatte, Künstler vom Zivildienst zu befreien: "[.] Aber so weit das Civi[l]gesetz in Betracht kommt, so ist es nicht immer nicht ganz leicht die Tendenz praktisch umzusetzen. Das Bedürfniß muß im gegebenen Fall in concreter Gestal…t hervortreten; es muß aber nicht Gegenstand von vielleicht etwas künstlichen Erwägungen sein. Wenn es sich um einen hervorragenden Künstler handelt, so würde es doch eigentlich eine Verschwendung von Arbeitskraft bedeuten, wenn die Potenz der Künstlerschaft dabei nicht berücksichtigt wird. Ich stehe dem von Ihnen aufgeworfenen Problem noch etwas ratlos gegenüber, möchte aber meine Antwort nicht so lange aussetzen.
