Zu diesen Orten gehört zweifellos Tibet, das Land, das auf allen Karten im dunkelste…n Braun der höchsten Berge der Welt eingezeichnet ist, das Land, das trotz allerstrengster Zutrittsverbote seit jeher das Ziel der Kühnen und Entschlossenen war. Die undurchdringlichsten Dschungel, die ödesten Gegenden beider Pole, die tief unter der Erde verborgenen tausendjährigen Geheimnisse ? sie alle waren vertrauter und bekannter als dieses Reich der Bergriesen, Seen und ewigen Stürme. Grausam und abweisend zeigte sich Tibet vielen Forschungsreisenden. Anderen wieder wurde es zum malerischen Land der Verheißung. Wie war also Tibet wirklich? Die ersten, oft unter Einsatz des Lebens aufgezeichneten Karten wiesen noch viele weiße Flecke auf, und die ältesten Reisebeschreibungen schilderten den ?Westlichen Himmel" in romantischen Andeutungen. Es gab nur wenige Augenzeugen und glaubwürdige Berichte. Auch die besten Studien und Zeichnungen lüfteten nur zum Teil den geheimnisvollen Schleier, der das Leben der Nomaden, der Mönche und Kirchenfürsten verhüllte. Es schien, als ob all die stürmischen Zeitläufe und Ereignisse, die über Europa und Asien dahin-fegten, an den unerschütterlichen tibetischen Bergmassiven barsten und zerschellten. Das 'Land lebte weiter wie in unantastbarer Verwünschung. Und doch ging ein mächtig anziehender Zauber von ihm aus ? neue, unglaubliche Berichte und Legenden sickerten vor' Zeit zu Zeit durch. Die Bilder jener, die aller Unbill zum Trotz manche Gebiete Tibets durchwandert und in Farben festgehalten hatten, Tagebücher einiger Forschungsreisender, denen es gelungen war, bis in die heilige Stadt Lhasa vorzudringen, wurden von den ersten Photographien, den ersten Filmaufnahmen abgelöst. Das neue Jahrhundert brachte neue Erkenntnisse. Die Entwicklung der übrigen Welt begann auch Tibet zu berühren. ?Der Weg nach Lhasa? ist ein Buch aus der neuesten Periode der historischen Wandlungen, die dieses Land durchmachte. Es ist nicht nur eine Reisebeschreibung zweier tschechoslowakischer Autoren, Vladimir Sis und Josef Vanii, die noch im Jahre 1955 in der Hauptstadt Lhasa weilten, sondern es hält auch zugleich den Bau der neuen Hochgebirgsstraße fest, die Tibet mit dem Inneren 'Chinas verbindet. Die beiden jungen Autoren des Buches sind beim Film tätig und haben gemeinsam mit ihren chinesischen Berufskollegen an den Aufnahmearbeiten in Tibet teilgenommen. So lernten sie auf ihrer Expedition viele Besonderheiten des Landes kennen. Sie begegneten tibetischen Hirten, besuchten geheimnisvolle Klöster, schlossen Freundschaft mit Karawanenführern. In dünner Luft, mehrere Tausend Meter über dem Meeresspiegel schlugen sie ihre Zelte auf; durchdrangen dichte Urwälder, standen an den Ufern geheiligter Flüsse und Seen. Sie begleiteten den XIV. Dalai-Lama und sein Gefolge auf der Fahrt von den Ufern des Mekong in das Innere des Landes. In einem Boot aus Yakfellen gelangten sie nach Lhasa und wurden als einzige Europäer Zeugen der Einfahrt der ersten Automobile in diese Stadt. Sie besuchten die berühmtesten Tempel und Klöster des Landes, wo sie mit Hilfe des Blitzlichts nie vorher veröffentlichte altertümliche Kunstwerke photographierten, die tief im Dunkel verborgen sind. Bei ihren Besuchen im Palast des Dalai-Lama, Potala-gun, entdeckten sie eine Reihe unbekannter Dokumente. Sie sahen auf dem Dach des Palastes die Pavillons der ?Goldenen Stadt" und durchwanderten die paradiesischen Gärten des Sommersitzes Norbu Ling-ka.
