Curated by Hedi Slimane, the design director of Dior Homme, PARIS was in many ways a reaction to our tendency… toward the baroque - one that we had just fully indulged in the previous issue, Touch. For Paris, leading architects, artists, and designers portrayed the City of Light as the City of Tomorrow, with clean, spare lines and a strict white, gray, and black color palette. The issue was a testament to Hedi's reductionist aesthetic and an exploration of a burgeoning new movement: art that has its base in architecture. To this end, architect Greg Lynn designed a lacquered gray monolith with an interior topography engineered to hold the bound book as though suspended in space. Contributors included architects Neil Denari, Andreas Angelidakis, and Dominique Perrault; video artist Chris Cunningham; artists Thomas Demand, Elisabeth Ballet, James Casebere, and Craig Kalpakjian; graphic designers H5 and John Maeda; and the French band Air. Perfekter Zustand! Komplett mit Schuber! Sammler-Exemplar! Hedi Slimane, geboren am 5. Juli 1968 in Paris, ist ein französischer Modedesigner, Künstler und Fotograf. Der Sohn eines Tunesiers und einer Italienerin studierte Politik und Kunstgeschichte an der Ecole du Louvre in Paris und lebte längere Zeit in Berlin. 1996 holte Yves Saint Laurent den damals noch unbekannten Slimane ins Unternehmen und machte ihn zum Chef-Designer der Herrenkollektion. In dieser Position schaffte Slimane den Durchbruch in der Modeszene, aufgrund seiner schmalen Schnitte und Silhouetten und einer ausgeprägten Taillierung setzte er neue Maßstäbe in der Herrenmode. Er verließ das Unternehmen 1999. Seit dem Jahr 2000 entwarf Slimane für die Gruppe LVMH als Chefdesigner des Modehauses Christian Dior die Herrenkollektionen Dior Homme von der Winterkollektion 2001-2002 bis zur Winterkollektion 2007-2008. Sein Nachfolger ist der Belgier Kris van Assche, einer von Slimanes ehemaligen Assistenten. Hedi Slimane, der zwischen seinen Wohnorten Paris und Los Angeles pendelt, beschäftigt sich derzeit mit diversten Ausstellungen in Museen weltweit. Weiterhin möchte er in naher Zukunft eine eigene Modekollektion präsentieren, erstmals auch im Bereich Womans-Wear. Als ausgesprochener Indie-Rock-Fan ist Slimane in dieser Szene sehr verwurzelt. Er war bei der Gründung mehrerer Bands behilflich, fotografierte für das Cover diverser Alben (daraus entstand auch sein Photo-Buch Stage, über seine Eindrücke aus der Szene).
