Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Robert Smirke, R.A. (illustratore). Five volumes with paneled tree calf boards, each book featuring seven spine bands with gilt devices/titles; plus their volume numbers (appropriately in Arabic numerals). The latter are each set against a small black circle; with a gilt circumference (see image). Internally, there are marbled endpapers. Each book features engravings from pictures by Robert Smirke, R.A. Volume 4 has four such engravings while the others have five each. In the last volume the illustrations have tissue guards. Each book has a tipped in name plate (a coat of arms) on the front pastedown. These books were all published in 1802. Generally their condition can be described along similar lines. Externally, there is some edgewear, including bent book corners with parts of the spine variously rubbed and/or slightly torn in places. There is general tanning throughout with intermittent spotting - especially, for example, on the books' preliminary and final pages (also on the last volume's tissue guards). However, the following variations also apply to the condition of specific books. Volume 1: front and back inner hinge repair with adhesive fabric tape (see image). Ink signature on title page. Upper and lower board corners have obvious bending; as well as some rubbing and fading of the calf. Pagination: pp. lxi, 385. Volume 2: both the head and tail of the spine show some minor damage. In particular, the head of the spine has a closed tear (<30 mm) at the front of the book. Pagination: pp. 432. Volume 3 (pagination): pp. 405. Volume 4: the volume number on the spine no longer has the black background colour; although the gilt circle border remains visible. At the head of the spine there is some similar damage (see comment about volume 2) to the leather i.e. a closed tear (<30 mm) - this time located w.r.t. the lower board's outer hinge. pp. 461. Volume 5: Similar spine issues to those previously mentioned, same size and nature but at both the head and tail. The tear at the tail of the spine is slightly longer i.e. c 40 mm. The tissue guards, which appear to feature in this volume only are obviously tanned and spotted. As with volume 4, the book's number is no longer easily visible; plus the gilt circular border has also faded away (see relevant image) pp. 474. Books? size: 8vo (crown octavo). More information and photos are available on request. Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping & postage charges (e.g. for additional weight of 5 volumes). Proceeds to Amnesty International. "An Exceedingly Convenient Book for Hasty Reference" Roscoe, Henry [1800-1836]. Smirke, Edward [1795-1875], Editor. A Digest of the Law of Evidence on the Trial of Actions at Nisi Prius. With Notes; And References to the English Common Law and Ecclesiastical Reports. London: William Benning and Co., 1844. lxxi, 832 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Contemporary paper-covered boards, rebacked in contrasting quarter-paper, period-style printed paper title label to spine, hinges mended, untrimmed edges, several signatures unopened. Light rubbing and a bit of soiling to boards, moderate rubbing to board edges, corners bumped and somewhat worn. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing in a few places, early inscription ("Mitchell & Clarke") to head of title page, pencil annotations to verso of front endleaf. $250. * Sixth edition. Marvin says this work "does not affect to be a scientific Treatise upon Evidence, but, as a correct and Brief Digest of Cases, it will found to be an exceedingly convenient book for hasty reference." It appears to have indeed served as a convenient reference for the employees of Mitchell & Clarke, a Norfolk law firm. A popular work; it went through several later editions, the last one in 1987. OCLC locates no print copies of the sixth edition. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 619-620. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 2:306.
