Aggiungi al carrello4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with closed tears unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed to 'John Hunter Esqre | Auditor of Court of Sn.' Written three months before Jeffrey's death, the letter begins: 'My dear Hunter - I hope you do not think that I have been forgetful of you - or indiffere…nt to your fortunes - or ungrateful for your very kind expressions - and I firmly believe feelings - towards me - because I may appear to have been slow in offering you my congratulations on your late appointment [as Auditor of the Court of Sessions]'. Taking up the new appointment will involve Hunter 'relinquishing the situation of [Jeffrey's] private agent and adviser', and this has been a source of 'some anxiety': 'at my age, and with my habits [it is] a great misfortune and embarrassment'. The letter continues with a discussion of the matter. 'I can easily see that your engagements in your new office, may make this matter difficult to arrange - but I wish much that it shld be arranged, if possible, before the courts meet on 13 Novr'. In a postscript he assures him that he believes that he owes his appointment 'entirely to your own merits - and the general good opinion which these merits have won for you'. For more on John Hunter, friend of Leigh Hunt and the Carlyles, whose sister Elizabeth Helen Hunter (1798-1824) married Francis Jeffrey's brother John (1775-1848), and who took over the tenancy of Craigcrook Castle after Jeffrey's death, see Helen Watt, 'John Hunter, the Forgotten Tenant of Craigcrook' (Edinburgh, 1977).

Aggiungi al carrelloThe recipient is clearly not the American politician Joseph Lanier Williams (1810-1865), but rather an editor of Beveridge's history of India at Blackie's. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, but with diagonal crease at bottom right going through Beveridge's signature. Folded for postage. Addressed to 'Joseph L. Williams…Esqr' and signed 'Henry Beveridge'. He begins by undertaking to 'attend to the matters' mentioned in Williams's note. 'Some time ago Dr Blackie [Walter Graham Blackie (1816-1906), brother of the head of the firm John Blackie] called my attention to Cheitore or Chittor as I see Thornton [i.e. Edward Thornton, author of 'A Gazetteer of the Territories under the Government of the East-India Company, and of the Native States on the Continent of India', 1854]. As the proof passes through my hands it will be easy to correct the necessary paragraph about the date you mention. I am not quite so sure as to Cochen but will keep it in view and take the first opportunity that occurs to correct a paragraph.'.

Aggiungi al carrelloAn amusing piece of Victorian memorabilia. Written in pencil on one side of a slip of paper, roughly 14 x 7 cm, torn from the bottom of a leaf. Both sides of the paper are ruled, with the ruling on the reverse wider spaced. Confirming the fact that the item is a telegram is the fact that the word 'Clerk.' is printed at bottom ri…ght of the reverse, with the word 'Railway' in pencil at top right. The puzzling text of the telegram, no doubt in the hand of the telegram clerk, reads, with annotation '1862': 'Rugby / From Prince Alfred to The Queen / Osborne / I hope to be at Southampton about nine o clock. And wish the Fairy to be sent there to wait for me. / 26 Feby'. See Image.

Aggiungi al carrelloLandscape. On one side of a piece of paper roughly 25 x 41 cm. In poor condition: aged and damp stained, with loss to top-right and bottom-right hand corners (in neither case affecting text or design). Laid down on a piece of white paper. Title and small portrait head of Moore surrounded by an ornate calligraphic embellishment.…The poem, of nine heroic couplets arranged in two columns, is engraved in copperplate, and begins 'Lamented Moore! for thee our grief how just' and ends 'Each Soldier mourns his Leader now no more.' In the top left-hand corner is 'Plate 20', but the use of the phrase 'Published as the Act directs' suggests separate publication.

Aggiungi al carrello1p, 4to. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded three times. The letter reads: 'My dear Duke | I have much gratification in acquainting Your Grace that I have placed Mr Edward Gage in my Regiment, and I am sure You will believe that it affords me great satisfaction to have had so early an opportunity of meeting You…r Wishes It will be necessary for him to lodge the purchase money at Messrs. Greenwood & Co's Craigs Court | I seize with great eagerness every Opportunity of renewing to Your Grace an Assurance of the very great Regard with which | I am My dear Duke | very sincerely Yours | William Frederick'. Accession number in a Victorian hand at top left: '6985'. The Duke's entry in the Oxford DNB marks the contrast between a 'plethora of academic distinctions' and 'his renowned lack of intelligence: his most widely used nickname was Silly Billy'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
