The plates consist of a photograph of the original carved inscription, and for clarity a facing page of the hieroglyphics transcribed. A fine, as new copy. "Anthony Spalinger's new monograph discusses the Great Dedicatory Inscription and these processes anew by means of perspicuous, accurate, translations of the surviving texts, enlivened by equally stimulating commentaries. These are accompanied likewise by meticulously researched footnotes, which have been marshaled with a diligence for which the author is rightly renowned. All of this is done here with exemplary skill and a fine eye for detail, and our libraries are far the richer for it." A.J. Peden This volume covers, for the first time, the interaction of a major historical event with the development of the Egyptian Solar-Osirian theology. Pharaoh Ramesses II visited the sacred area of Abydos soon after his recognition of power at Luxor in Thebes. With him were many high officials, one of whom would be soon appointed to be the high Priest of Amun at Thebes, Nebwenenef. During his visit, the king stressed his personal relationship with his father, Seti I as well as ordering the completion of his temple. By analyzing certain passages within Ramesses' official account, the Dedicatory Inscription, with others of Seti, a more nuanced appreciation of the growing theological system of Osirus plus Re, the sun god, comes to the fore. This significance of this is heightened when we remember that the king's account was exhibited in the portico of Seti I's temple. This is Volume 33 in the Brill series, "Culture and History of the Ancient Near East.".

"The study of the ancient Egyptian military and warfare now encompasses the background court society in which the various eulogies drawn up for the glorification of the kings were composed. This study proceeds from a previous analysis of the leadership characteristics of the military pharaohs to their underlying war records, the literary compositions that the pharaohs had drawn up for their glorification. A study of these court-inspired accounts fits within the overarching new perspectives of royally directed and inspired ancient Egyptian literature. The historical background covers the New Kingdom pharaohs Kamose, Thutmose III, Ramesses II and III, with Merenptah, plus Pianchy. The concentration is primarily upon the narrative structures employed in each of these king's monumental inscriptions"-- (Publisher) Contents: Introduction and themes -- Kamose's war records -- Thutmose III and Megiddo -- The structure of the Kadesh poem -- Merenptah and the Israel stela -- Merenptah and Ramesses III -- Pharaoh Pianchy and his Great stela -- Conclusion. This is Volume 124 in the Brill series, "Culture and History of the Ancient Near East." This is also Volume 4 of the Brill series, "Ancient Warfare.".

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This is the first comprehensive treatment of the composition and historiographic background of ancient Egyptian military inscriptions (c. 1550 B.C. to C. 450 B.C.). In his chronological study Anthony Spalinger analyzes numerous texts from a formalistic as well as a literary viewpoint. His discovery-that aspects of ancient Egyptian military writing were regulated by a preexisting framework and set phraseology-will enable historians of ancient Egypt to discriminate between what was hyperbole and what was reality in a given military situation. The opening chapters of this work cover the briefer and simpler of the Egyptian military texts. A standard subgenre of this writing was the so-called iw.tw texts (meaning "One came"), in which the events of a war were couched in an official report by a messenger to the Pharaoh. These short inscriptions became a stock part of Egyptian military writing in the early days of the Empire and were carried down to the end of Pharaonic civilization. Spalinger next deals with the stock lexical items employed by the Egyptians when drawing up military compositions. He then considers the official war diary of the scribes as well as the more literary war accounts. In the final chapter Spalinger describes how the ancient Egyptians themselves classified their military texts. Although recognizing that the different Pharaohs had stylistic preferences, he relates the method of inscription chosen by the Egyptians to the importance of the military event or to the amount of detail preferred. This is the first comprehensive treatment of the composition and historiographic background of ancient Egyptian military inscriptions (c. 155 B.C. to c. 450 B.C.). In his chronological study Anthony Spalinger analyzes numerous texts from a formalistic as well as a literary viewpoint.
