Karasek, der eine Reihe von Jahren in verschiedenen Orten Usambaras sich aufgehalten hat, ist im Frühjahr 1910 verstorben. Er war kein Ethnograph von Fach, doch zeichnete ihn scharfe Beobachtungsgabe und tiefes Verständnis für die Psyche der Waschambaa aus. Es ist sehr zu bedauern, daß er seine zahlreichen Notizen nicht selbst zu einer Gesamtdarstellung hat verarbeiten können; es liegt nur ein Teil einer nicht druckfertigen Stoffsammlung vor. Nach Möglichkeit hat der Herausgeber den Charakter der Karasekschen Niederschriften gewahrt und die Sichtung und Anordnung des Materials in Anlehnung an die Disposition vorgenommen, die Prof. F. v. Luschan der Anleitung für ethnographische Beobachtungen und Sammlungen in Afrika und Ozeanien zu Grunde gelegt hat. KLEINERE MITTEILUNGEN. ZUM KULTUS UND ZAUBERGLAUBEN DER EVHEER (TOGO). VON C. SPIESS (MISSIONAR). DER LEGBA-KULT. Die Evheer bezeichnen die aus Lehm hergestellten menschenähnlichen Figuren, die man an Wegen, auf öffentlichen Plätzen wie vor den Eingängen eines Dorfes, auch in der Nähe der Hütten vorfinden kann, mit dem Namen Legbawo. Die Bezeichnung von Legba, aus lé fangen, gba zerbrechen, führt uns die Aufgabe dieser Darstellungen. Auf unserm Bilde bemerken wir eine Reihe kleiner Stäbe, die als Abwehrmittel von den Legbawo bei bösen Einflüssen, Krankheiten, Überfällen u.dgl. gehandhabt werden. Nicht nur diese Art Verteidigungsmittel findet man vor den Legbawo aufgestellt, sondern manchen dieser Lehmfiguren werden auch Messer gewissermaßen in die Hand gegeben. Die Eingeborenen bringen den Legbawo des öfteren Opfer, worauf die Menge Kauris zu den Füßen des Legba und namentlich die Opferschale hinweisen. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
