Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. An attractive and complete set of Dickens' Works in nineteen volumes, uniformly bound in three-quarter leather. The Biographical Edition was published by Dickens' original publishers Chapman and Hall and presents his major novels, stories, travel writings and other works, each volume accompanied by an introductory biographical and literary preface. Particularly appealing is the extensive use of the illustrations associated with Dickens' works, including those by George Cruikshank and Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), together with George Cattermole, Marcus Stone, Luke Fildes, John Leech, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Richard Doyle, Frederick Walker and others. These include many of the images which have become inseparably associated with Dickens' characters and their original publications. The Biographical Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens, in Nineteen Volumes. Edited with introductions by Arthur Waugh (1866-1943), literary critic and father of Evelyn Waugh. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1902-1905. The individual volumes are variously dated: five undated, three 1902, eight 1903, two 1904 and one 1905. A very good set of hardbacks, uniformly bound in three-quarter dark green calf over green cloth boards, with gilt-lined borders. The spines have uniformly sunned to an attractive brown, retaining their gilt-tooled compartments and lettering. Covers with some scuffing and shelf wear commensurate with age. The marbled endpapers are split along the front inner hinges of the majority of volumes, with the binding cords visible, and a lesser number of rear inner hinges are similarly affected. Despite this, the bindings remain sound and secure, with all boards firmly attached. With swirled marbled endpapers, with some offsetting opposite leather turn-ins. Text is generally bright and clean with some toning/usage marks to vertical edge of text block. Top edges gilt, and still shiny and bright. Occasional minor page flaw. With attractive illustrations. A handsome and imposing set of Dickens, presenting particularly well on the shelf. Dimensions: each volume approximately: 226mm high x 152mm wide x 32mm deep. Weight: approximately 17kg (the set - unpacked). PLEASE NOTE: No extra postage required other than that shown, for UK orders. Elsewhere, please check with us first - there may be extra postage required due to size and weight of this set. George Cruikshank and Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), together with George Cattermole, Marcus Stone, Luke Fildes, John Leech, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Richard Doyle, Frederick Walker and others. Each volume with engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette title pages and letterpress half titles. Vols. I - VI: "The Life of Lord Byron," (by T. Moore). Vol. VII: "Hours of Idleness, Etc." Vol. VIII: "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage." Vol. IX: "The Giaour" and "The Corsair." Vol. X: "The Siege of Corinth, Parisian, Etc." Vol. XI, "Manfred Etc." Vol. XII: "Marino Faliero" Etc. Vol. XIII "Sardanapalus" Etc." Vol. XIV: "Cain," "Werner" Etc." Vols XV-XVII "Don Juan," Appendices and Index. Complete as issued. **CONDITION: Very Good. Light wear seen to spines, top edge, or boards of a few volumes. Several have light wear to extremities of front joints; hinges are in order. Light soiling to rear board seen on 2 volumes. Inside, text is generally clean and bright, with light marginal foxing and toning affecting some of the earlier plates. Frontis at Vol. I a bit over-opened. Some missing tissue guards. Vol.1 and XIV show some exterior soiling to the rear boards. A small burgundy and gold foil printed booksellers label appears to gutter of volume I, reading "William Brown/Fine Art & Antiquarian Bookseller/5 Castle Street, Edinburgh." The bookstore was at this city center address into the twentieth century. Armorial bookplate of Gwen and Henry Melchett to each volume endpaper. **THE ART-- The largest contingent of engraved plates (17) are after works by J.M.W. TURNER, R.A. (1775-1851). British marine artist and former sailor CLARKSON FREDERICK STANFIELD, RA, RBA (1793-1867) has seven scenes. William Cattermole, W. Purder, J.D. Harding, William Westall and G. Cattermole provide the remaining numbers, totaling 30 scenes and two engraved facsimile MS. The scenes were engraved by London's WILLIAM (1787-1852) and EDWARD FINDEN (1791-1857). From Cadiz to Constantinople, Newstead Abbey, the Bernese Alps, Seville, along the Rhine, to Venice, Rome, and Greece, the illustrations trace the travels of the itinerant author in his years of "voluntary exile" from Britain, said, by biographer R.Holmes, to escape "gambling debts, a broken marriage and tempestuous scandals." **Published between 1832-33, this collection contains the six volumes of an amended biography by fellow Irish poet and novelist, Thomas Moore, first brought out in 1830. Included are some of Byron's correspondence with his publisher, and biographer, as well as speeches and other materials. The series was originally planned at fourteen volumes, later growing to seventeen, as explained in the advertisement to Vol. VIII. The many Notes, Letters, Prefaces and Dedications reflect Byron's contemporary popularity, some detractors as well-- amongst those who knew and worked with him, including his publisher John Murray, Sir Walter Scott, John Wilson.with some being both detractors and admirers. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Mary Godwin and Percy B. Shelley are all noted, as is the Countess Guiccioli, and diarists Pietro Gamba and Col. Leicester Stanhope. **PROVENANCE: Bookplate of (Lord and Lady) "Henry and Gwen Melchett," with their armorial bookplate to each volume. Gwen Wilson Mond, Lady Melchette (1899-1982) married Henry Mond, 2nd Baron Melchett in 1920. She was a South African-born art student who met her future husband while studying at the Slade School of Art. Both the Melchetts were patrons of the arts, with their Mulberry House, Westminster drawing room featuring a modernist mural "The Loves of Jupiter" by the painter Glyn Philpot. Bohemian artistic friends also included Augustus John, Gilbert Cannan and others of the Bloomsbury artists and writers of the time. R. Holmes, Coleridge: Darker Reflections 1804-1834 (1998). Watson 271. (AMJ). G. Cattermole (after) J.M.W. Turner (after); Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (after); W. Westall, A.R.A.;William and Edward Finden (engravings) (illustratore). Book.…

(4to) 32.5x24 cm (12¾ x 9½") period three-quarter blue morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt. Edges worn, front hinge open; paper a bit toned but overall internally near fine.Henry Vizetelly, Printer and engraver, Gough Square, Fleet Street"Plates engraved by Louis Marvy; after Sir Augustus Wall Callcott, J.M.W. Turner, J. Holland, Francis Danby, Thomas Creswick, William Collins, Richard Redgrave, Frederick Richard Lee, George Cattermole, William James Mu?ller, James Duffield Harding, Peter Nasmyth, Richard Wilson, Edward William Cooke, John Constable, Peter De Wint, David Cox, Thomas Gainsborough, David Roberts, and Clarkson Stanfield. Each plate is followed by a short critique by Thackeray. Thackeray was an old friend of Marvy, a French artist, who took refuge in London after the chaos of 1848. Theodore Taylor's 1864 biography of Thackeray mentions the history of the book: "A fine and skillful landscape painter himself, M. Marvy, while here, as a means of earning a living, made a series of engravings after the works of our English landscape painters. The publishers, however, would not undertake the work without a series of letter-press notices of each picture from Thackeray; and the latter accordingly added some criticisms which are interesting as developing his theory of this kind of art" (p.32). An interesting and quite scarce Thackeray item, very rarely found colored.Abbey, Life in England, no 207 : "The majority of the copies issued were uncoloured.".…
