Questo libro intendeva coprire i progressi compiuti nello studio della logica nella prima metà del XIX secolo…, periodo durante il quale l'autrice riteneva che fossero stati compiuti progressi maggiori rispetto a tutto il periodo precedente dai tempi di Aristotele. Progressi che, ai suoi occhi, non erano presenti nei libri di testo contemporanei. In quanto tale, questo libro offre uno spaccato prezioso dello sviluppo della materia, ripercorrendo questo periodo frenetico del suo sviluppo con una consapevolezza diretta del suo valore documentario. Lizzie Susan Stebbing (1885 1943) è stata una filosofa britannica studiosa di logica. Fu allieva di William Ernest Johnson, ma fu anche influenzata dal pensiero di Bertrand Russel, di Alfred North Whitehead e di George Edward Moore. Divenne un punto di congiunzione con il Circolo di Vienna, e fu la prima ad invitare Rudolf Carnap a tenere una conferenza nel Regno Unito. Fra le sue opere più conosciute ed importanti, vi è A modern introduction to logic (1930, in cui esplora la logica formale e le tecniche logiche analizzando allo stesso tempo i problemi epistemologici e metafisici ad esse correlati).
