Der aus Köln stammende Autor war nach einer Mitteilung im Deutschen Philologen-Blatt im Jahr 1919 zum Leiter der deutschen Schule in Guatemala ernannt worden. Schon 1923 verließ er die Schule und ließ sich einen Pass als Handelsreisender ausstellen. In dieser Funktion bereiste er über…mehrere Jahre ganz Mexiko. Seine Schilderung des Landes teilt sich in zwei Teile. Eine Darstellung der deutschen Auswanderer im Land und die wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten für Deutsche im Land. Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit der Landesnatur, der Kultur und der Eigenart der Bevölkerung. Stelzmann kehrte vermutlich schon 1927 nach Deutschland zurück. Eine interessante Entdeckung war, dass er 1944 wegen "Rundfunkverbrechens" und "staatsabträglichen Äußerungen" in Freiburg verurteilt wurde. Das dortige Staatsarchiv verwahrt die Gerichtsakten und die Akten des Wiedergutmachungsverfahrens. Er wird in den Akten als Studienrat, wohnhaft in Gaienhofen am Bodensee bezeichnet. Das Geburtsdatum (14. Oktober 1884) und Geburtsort (Köln) stimmen bei den Akten und den im Buch abgebildeten Reisepass genau überein. - Gutes sauberes Exemplar.
