Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, subsequent impression with number line '3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2'. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, IN BLACK BIRO, WITHOUT DEDICATION, ON TITLE PAGE. Some minuscule edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very very slightly bruised, not price clipped (£18.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 397pp, illustrated. They say that being a good doctor boils down to just four things: Shut up, listen, know something, care. The same could be said for life on the road too. When Stephen Fabes left his job as a junior doctor and set out to cycle around the world, frontline medicine quickly faded from his mind. Of more pressing concern were the daily challenges of life as an unfit rider on an overloaded bike, helplessly in thrall to pastries. But leaving medicine behind is not as easy as it seems. As he roves continents, he finds people whose health has suffered through exile, stigma or circumstance, and others, whose lives have been saved through kindness and community. After encountering a frozen body of a monk in the Himalayas, he is drawn ever more to healthcare at the margins of the world, to crumbling sanitoriums and refugee camps, to city dumps and war torn hospital wards. And as he learns the value of listening to lives, not just solving diagnostic puzzles, Stephen challenges us to see care for the sick as a duty born of our humanity, and our compassion. Very scarce signed. Jacket by Harry Tennant (illustratore). Signed by Author(s). …

With beautiful illustrated endpapers and thirty-two tipped-in plates by Stephen Tennant. Collated, complete. A delightful poetry work by Stephen Tennant, best remembered for his central role in the "Bright Young Things" group of the 1920s. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First trade edition, following the private limited edition printed on vellum. Publisher's original blue cloth with white titles to the upper board, with the illustrated dust-jacket which is slightly rubbed at the spine and torn at fold joints and front panel (neatly repaired from the inside with archival tape) Endpapers and titlepage lightly foxed, otherwise contents clean with no old inscriptions or other markings. Tennant's drawings and handwriting are illustrated in facsimile to describe scenes of gay abandon in the life of a missionary sent to the tropics. A VG+ copy in the decent jacket, which is frequently absent with this title. Although date of publication given as 1929, it was not published until 1937. Tennant's decidedly risqué 'Notebook' is a camped-up tale of the Rev. Littlejohn and his two female companions who embark on a missionary expedition into the jungle. No end of mishaps and strange 'encounters' befall them until they eventually head for home, seen off at the beach by a troupe of jigging sailors. Tennant was a British socialite and reputedly the brightest of the 'Bright Young People'. He was the youngest son of Edward Tennant, 1st Baron Glenconner, and the former Pamela Wyndham, one of the Wyndham sisters and of The Souls clique. His mother was also a cousin of Lord Alfred Douglas (18701945), Oscar Wilde's lover and a sonneteer. During the 1920s and 1930s he was romantically involved with Siegfried Sassoon. Book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Limited Edition. One of 200 copies, octavo size, 55 pp., with prospectus and publisher's box. British socialite Stephen James Napier Tennant (1906-1987), known for his idle and decadent lifestyle, was one of the "Bright Young People", a bohemian group of young aristocrats who received much publicity for their lavish parties and overall luxurious way of life. Tennant was a prominent figure in this group and was the inspiration for several fictional characters, including Cedric Hampton in Nancy Mitford's novel "Love in a Cold Climate"; he was also, for several years, a partner of the poet Sigfried Sassoon (1886-1967). These two stories by Tennant were printed by Elysium Press, which began in 1980 and often prints writings that are out of print or out of fashion, with a focus on the works of gay writers which "ha[ve] been neglected or overlooked by the commercial trade" (per the Elysium Press website). Over the course of nearly forty years, Tennant worked on the novel "Lascar", producing copious amounts of unpublished material; the two stories in this volume represent his rich writing style, largely unread and unknown by the public. The volume is housed in the publisher's box with a pattern matching that of the binding, with the prospectus, which features one of the colour illustrations by Tennant found in the book. Scarce in the marketplace, we find no other copies online as of this writing; our search of OCLC located fifteen copies with institutions. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter purple cloth with dark blue boards featuring an all-over pattern of stars, dark blue lettering and ornament on the spine, fore-edge rought cut, title page with green border of stars and purple lettering, monochrome photograph of Stephen Tennant by Cecil Beaton on the verso of the title page, text printed in brown, green, and purple, seven full-page colour illustrations by Tennant throughout, line drawings in brown by Tennant throughout; Cochin type, Zerkall paper, octavo size (9.5" by 7.5"), pagination: [4] [i] ii-iii [iv-vi] [1] 2-41 [42-44] [1 colophon], one of 200 copies, this copy out of series (unnumbered). With prospectus, one sheet printed in blue, with a duplicate of the illustration facing page 9 on the verso. Housed in the publisher's box, covered in blue paper with the same star pattern as the boards, white paper label with black decorative border and lettering on the front. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean, the corners straight, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light rubbing to the corners, else fine. The prospectus is fine, clean and without wear. The publisher's box is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean but for a few specks on the rear board, without wear but for light rubbing on the bottom edge and corners of the front board. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. Quarto. Eight-page publicity brochure. Wrappers. The exhibition seems to have featured the paintings and drawings from Stephen Tennant's Lascar series which he made as part of an uncompleted novel-writing project. The cover illustration is a colour reproduction of one of the pictures, this one showing at least twenty-eight denizens of Marseille, the setting for the novel. Inside are four photographs of Tennant, including one by Cecil Beaton of him as Echo in his ballet The Mirage and the Echo. Three of the pages are devoted to reproduction of what appear to be diary entries in his handwriting, which is flamboyant almost to the point of illegibility. Loosely inserted is a four-page flyer for the exhibition containing three more photographs of Tennant. On the front cover of the brochure (in the margins away from the main image) is a presentation inscription by the artist: ''to Darling Ava from her forgotten old friend S. November 1955. Do please come & stay with me. & bring Sir John''. The recipient is possibly the wife of Sir John Anderson who had recently been made a Viscount. Tennant had known Ava Wigram, as she then was, in the twenties when he was ''the brightest of the Bright Young People''.Very good indeed. …

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first printing. Limited edition, One of 125 copies on vellum paper. Signed by the author. Publisher's original yellow cloth with gilt titles to the upper board, in the author illustrated dustwrapper. Tennant's drawings and handwriting are illustrated in facsimile throughout. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth just a little darkened at the head of the spine, is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' marks. Complete with the rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has a few tiny closed tears and some toning to the spine and panel edges. An attractive example, uncommon in this deluxe issue. A deliberately camp and extravagantly illustrated fantasy that takes the form of the diary of the fictional Reverend Felix Littlejohn, a missionary travelling through an imagined tropical landscape. The book is dedicated to E. M. Forster, an early champion of Tennant, the quintessential "Bright Young Thing" of whom Cecil Beaton famously remarked, "He makes the rest of the world seem squalid". Although the title page is dated 1929, publication was delayed until 1937. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. All items are catalogued by humans.
