This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States.The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has…been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record.In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Anderson 346) Edwin Clark (1814-1894), after acting as mathematical master at Brook Green, and then as a surveyor in the west of England, went to London in 1846 and formed the acquaintance of Robert Stephenson, who appointed him superintending engineer of the Menai Strait Bridge, which was opened on 5 March 1850. In that year he published The Britannia and Conway Tubular Bridges (3 vols., the third an atlas). In August 1850 he became engineer to the Electric and International Telegraph Company, and three months later he took out the first of several patents for -electric telegraphs and apparatus connected therewith-. From then on he divided his time between electric and hydraulic engineering. On 4 February 1856 he took out a patent for -suspending insulated electric telegraph wires-, but most of his patents were for improvements in dry docks and floating docks, in the methods of lifting ships out of the water for repairs, and for constructing piers. He was elected a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers on 3 December 1850, and contributed many papers to their Proceedings, being awarded a Telford medal in 1866 for his paper -On the hydraulic lift graving dock-, and a Watt medal in 1868 for those on -The durability of materials-. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, boards are detached from one another, lacking the backtrip, Bumping and loss to the extremities. Light marks to the boards, including a dampstain to the rear board. A small amount of loss of cloth to the tail of the rear board. Internally, unbound. Plates are generally bright with spots and a few tide marks. Plates are edge worn with small tears. Lacking Plates II, III, IV, VI, XXXV, XXXVI, XXXVII, and XLIV. Poor.
