Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition maroon boards/brown spine/gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Illustrations; Introduction by Byron Hollinshead; Acknowledgments; Illustration Credits; and A… Note About the Editor. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "Twenty distinguished American historians vividly re-imagine twenty events of great drama and significance in our country's past. "What is the scene or incident in American history that you would like to have witnessed - and why?" This is the thought-provoking question that editor Byron Holingshead posed to twenty of our finest interpreters of American history with the invitation to write a personal essay answering it. The result is I Wish I'd Been There, a book that trains a lens on crucial moments of our past and brings them to vivid life. With these peerless scholars as their guides, readers will be transported to the Salem witch trials, the Lewis and Clark expedition, the raid on Harpers Ferry, the assissination of Abraham Lincoln, the Scopes "monkey trial," the beginnings of the Vietnam War, the voting rights march to Selma, and other turning points of our national drama. Contributors include Mary Beth Norton, Joseph Ellis, Jay Winik, Carol Berkin, Kevin Baker, Robert Cowley, Carolyn Gilman, Geoffrey Ward, Robert Dallek, and William Leuchtenburg, among other luminaries of the historical profession. I Wish I'd Been There is a marvelous concept, wonderfully and imaginatively executed. The result is an American pageant of character and event that will attract and delight readers of history." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Reyes, Jesse Marinoff (jacket design); Hobbing, Diane (book design) (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. First Printing as confirmed by McBride. The book would be fine save for shelf wear along bottom of boards and text block, slight translucent spotting of front lower text block. Else book is free of internal marking, spine is tight, boards ri…gid and tips are pointed. While the jacket has its price on the back flap, it has general wear all over, loss and small chipping at most edges, especially along spine and at top and bottom of spine. Actually looks quite smart in its shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.

Henry Francis du Pont was such a consummate artist, and the canvas was his beloved garden at Winterthur, du Pont's home from his birth in 1880 until his death in 1969. The sumptuous masterpiece he created in Wilmington, Delaware, is now open for the public to enjoy, but for years it functioned as a private horticultural laboratory where du Pont, primarily known as a visionary collector of American decorative arts, experimented as much with the landscape as with individual plant species gathered from the far corners of the globe. In "The Winterthur Garden, author Denise Magnani, curator of landscape at Winterthur, offers an intimate portrait of both the man and his environment. Magnani's text and additional essays are breathtakingly illustrated by landscape photographer Carol Betsch's lush pictures of this impeccably preserved national treasure. This newly issued paperback edition also features a new foreword by Winterthur's current director, Leslie Greene Bowman." ; apart from presence of writing on the title page, the condition is VG/VG. Signed by Author(s). Book.

"Poetry is an unacknowledged war industry. It is a known but unmitigated error of many intelligent people to look down on poetry as if it were a feather in the hat on a stormy day, curlicues on the fringe of nothing, play for an idle moment between major issues. Hence the infinite indifference to poetry in a society badly in need of it, but offering to it, as to Christianity, a meaningless lip service. Poetry is a necessity wearing the trapping of a luxury. It is a way to live, and a way to evaluate that way. It is a way of seeing, and therefore of believing" (Oscar Williams, Introduction).

Aggiungi al carrelloWilliam Rehnquist Supreme Court oversized black and white photograph signed by all nine justices, dressed in robes. Signed below on the illustration board in black felt tip by John Paul Stevens, Byron R. White, William H. Rehnquist, Harry A. Blackmun, Sandra Day O'Connor, David Souter, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, and Claren…ce Thomas. In near fine condition. The piece measures 14 inches by 10.25 inches. The Rehnquist Court refers to the Supreme Court of the United States from 1986 to 2005, when William Rehnquist served as Chief Justice of the United States. Rehnquist succeeded Warren Burger as Chief Justice after the latter's retirement, and Rehnquist served as Chief Justice until his death in 2005, at which point John Roberts was nominated and confirmed as Rehnquist's replacement. The Rehnquist Court is generally considered to be more conservative than the preceding Burger Court and Warren Court. According to Jeffrey Rosen, Rehnquist combined an amiable nature with great organizational skill, and he "led a Court that put the brakes on some of the excesses of the Earl Warren era while keeping pace with the sentiments of a majority of the country." Biographer John Jenkins argued that Rehnquist politicized the Supreme Court and moved the court and the country to the right. Through its rulings, the Rehnquist Court often promoted a policy of New Federalism in which more power was given to the states at the expense of the federal government. The Rehnquist Court was also notable for its stability, as the same nine justices served together from 1994 to 2005, the longest such stretch in Supreme Court history.
