Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition maroon boards/brown spine/gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Illustrations; Introduction by Byron Hollinshead; Acknowledgments; Illustration Credits; and A Note About the Editor. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "Twenty distinguished American historians vividly re-imagine twenty events of great drama and significance in our country's past. "What is the scene or incident in American history that you would like to have witnessed - and why?" This is the thought-provoking question that editor Byron Holingshead posed to twenty of our finest interpreters of American history with the invitation to write a personal essay answering it. The result is I Wish I'd Been There, a book that trains a lens on crucial moments of our past and brings them to vivid life. With these peerless scholars as their guides, readers will be transported to the Salem witch trials, the Lewis and Clark expedition, the raid on Harpers Ferry, the assissination of Abraham Lincoln, the Scopes "monkey trial," the beginnings of the Vietnam War, the voting rights march to Selma, and other turning points of our national drama. Contributors include Mary Beth Norton, Joseph Ellis, Jay Winik, Carol Berkin, Kevin Baker, Robert Cowley, Carolyn Gilman, Geoffrey Ward, Robert Dallek, and William Leuchtenburg, among other luminaries of the historical profession. I Wish I'd Been There is a marvelous concept, wonderfully and imaginatively executed. The result is an American pageant of character and event that will attract and delight readers of history." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. The book would be fine save for shelf wear along bottom of boards and text block, slight translucent spotting of front lower text block. Else book is free of internal marking, spine is tight, boards rigid and tips are pointed. While the jacket has its price on the back flap, it has general wear all over, loss and small chipping at most edges, especially along spine and at top and bottom of spine. Henry Francis du Pont was such a consummate artist, and the canvas was his beloved garden at Winterthur, du Pont's home from his birth in 1880 until his death in 1969. The sumptuous masterpiece he created in Wilmington, Delaware, is now open for the public to enjoy, but for years it functioned as a private horticultural laboratory where du Pont, primarily known as a visionary collector of American decorative arts, experimented as much with the landscape as with individual plant species gathered from the far corners of the globe. In "The Winterthur Garden, author Denise Magnani, curator of landscape at Winterthur, offers an intimate portrait of both the man and his environment. Magnani's text and additional essays are breathtakingly illustrated by landscape photographer Carol Betsch's lush pictures of this impeccably preserved national treasure. [Transcription:] "MEMBER NATIONAL BUREAU OF IDENTIFICATION WASHINGTON, D.C. Post Office Department OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INSPECTOR Washington WANTED JUNE 24, 1911. James Grimes, alias James Gleason, and Dennis Hart, for the robbery of the post offices at Fort Sumner, N. Mex., October 19, 1910, Texico, N. Mex., November 8, 1910, and Dawson, N. Mex., November 20, 1910. JAMES GRIMES DENNNIS HART DESCRIPTION. Age, 27 years; weight, 140 pounds; height, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches; eyes, blue-green; hair, brown; complexion, dark; foot, No. 5; teeth, large; scar on left hand; large wrinkles side of nose; American. DESCRIPTION. Age, 21 years; weight, 155 pounds; height, 5 feet 7 inches; eyes, blue; hair, brown; complexion, light and pimply; foot, No. 7; vaccine mark on right arm; small scar on back of head; small scar on left side of neck; small mole on right side of neck; American. Grimes and Hart were arrested March 10, 1911, at Albuquerque, N. Mex., but escaped from the county jail at Albuquerque, N. Mex., with a number of other prisoners, presumably about midnight of March 21, 1911. Upon proper application to the Post Office Department an allowance of reward will be made for the arrest and conviction of these persons under the terms and conditions of the Department's general offer of reward, as set forth in the Postmaster General's Order No. 3171, dated June 2, 1910, entitled "Notice of Reward." If apprehended, or located, telegraph Post Office Inspector in Charge, Denver, Colo., or the undersigned. R. S. SHARP, Chief Inspector" The April 3, 1911 issue of the Prescott Daily News refers to a Dennis Hart as a "gang leader" and describes the jail escapees as being connected with a post-office robbery. The newspaper has a subscription wall, so the search index only provides this key information. James Grimes turns up in a later New Mexico newspaper account concerning criminals brought from Ogden, Utah, to Albuquerque, describing James Grimes and George Miller as ex-convicts from the New Mexico penitentiary, charged with involvement in a safe robbery at Belen. Since the name is common, we need an additional details - age etc. before making that connection. A March 24, 1911 El Paso Morning Times report from Albuquerque identifies two U.S. prisoners being held for the Fort Sumner post-office robbery and another robbery at Belen. The same report states that the country, including Albuquerque, is being scoured for the prisoners escaped. The escape was more elaborate than the poster suggests. A contemporary Albuquerque report says that 9 prisoners escaped, being "led by Hart and Grimes" and that saws had been smuggled into the jail and were used to cut their way out. The saws were brought in by William McCrea, alias William Stevens. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Dick Lewis shortly afterwards on a ranch c. 3 miles north of Albuquerque, was jailed, again, in the county jail - but this time in a special compartment, not in the relative comfort he had enjoyed previously. McCrea was believed to have smuggled the saws into the jail and actually sawed one of the locks on the main inside gate. It also states that McCrea's capture brought the number of recaptured escapees to three. And that McCrea had given information that authorities believed could lead to the capture of Dennis Hart and James Grimes, describing them as U.S. prisoners who were "badly wanted." That is excellent confirmation that the men named on this June 24 circular are indeed the same Hart and Grimes who led the Albuquerque escape. So the chronology is now clear: Late March 1911 William McCrea/Stevens, suspected of supplying the escape saws, is captured. His information is expected to help locate Hart and Grimes. June 24, 1911 this circular is issued. This poster was not a routine federal fugitive circular. It was issued in the aftermath of a. . . and Dennis Hart. The federal circular is the more authoritative source. (illustratore). …

It is a known but unmitigated error of many intelligent people to look down on poetry as if it were a feather in the hat on a stormy day, curlicues on the fringe of nothing, play for an idle moment between major issues.
