Die Jahresausstellung 1975 des Graphischen Kabinetts des Stiftes Göttweig zeigt in seiner "Theorie der Architektur"' eine erstmalige Zusammenstellung von architekturtheoretischen Werken aus der eigenen Stiftsbibliothek, Einzelblätter aus der Ornamentstichsammlung des Graphischen Kabinetts, Handzeichnungen und Entwürfe der Plansammlung des Stiftarchivs, sowie Medaillen der Zeit Kaiser Karl VI. und des Stiftneubaues der Barockzeit aus der hiesigen Münz- und Medaillensammlung, letztere zur näheren ikonographischen Bestimmung des Troger Freskos der Apotheose Karl VI. in der Kaiserstiege. Ziel und Aufgabe dieser Ausstellung beruhen darin, Vorlagen und Elementarwerke aufzuzeigen für barocke Architekten, Bildhauer und Maler, deren diese sich bei Ausführung ihrer Aufträge bedienten als Anregung, Vorbild oder Vorlage, teils von ihnen selbst ausgesucht, teils ihnen vom Auftraggeber vorgegeben. Dies soll dem Ausstellungsort entsprechend überwiegend am Beispiel Göttweig und seiner Barockarchitektur aufgezeigt sein. Als Modellfall diene hierzu die Göttweiger Kaiserstiege, auch dafür, daß dieses unser Vorgehen keine "Entmythologisierung" des Künstlers der Barockzeit zur Folge hat. Beiläufige Früchte ergeben sich aus dieser Zusammenschau hauptsächlich für die überragende Bedeutung der Augsburger, Nürnberger und Münchner Verlage mit ihrem Stecherkreis, wie deren Art und Weise der Rezeption französischen und italienischen Geschmacks und deren Meister im 18. Jahrhundert. Beiden Gesichtspunkten ist bisher noch die adäquate Beachtung und Würdigung versagt geblieben, was in der Komplexität eines dergestaltigen Themas begründet liegt. Nach dem Klosterbrand Göttweig unter Abt Gottfried Bessel am 17. Juni 1718 waren ab 1719 nicht unbedeutende Künstler und Architekten am Wiederaufbau des barocken Stiftes tätig. Nachdem Jakob Prandtauers und Balthasar Neumanns Pläne nicht zum Zuge kamen, übernahm ab 4. Mai 1719 der kaiserliche Hofarchitekt Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt bis 1725 nach Abschluß der Bauarbeiten. am Osttrakt die Bauführung. Hildebrandts Nachfolger ist sein Bauführer Franz Jänggl aus Wien bis 1732 gest. 1734), dem wiederum ab 1726/34 bis 1746 Franz Anton Pilgram (1699 - 1761) aus Wien nachfolgte. Pilgram hatte sich besonders seit 1736/38 mit dem Fragenkomplex des äußersten westlichen Vorbaues einschließlich der Befestigungsmauern, mit der Wasserzuleitung, der Kaiserstiege, den Fürstenzimmern und der Dienertreppe zu beschäftigen (vgl. Plansamm-lung Nr. 13 - 19). Seine Pläne weichen nun von denen Hildebrandts schon wesentlich ab.
