Large Folio, 15"x11 1/4", soft orange wrappers with black imprinting and decorations on the covers, large frontis engraving + paper guard + 32 pp. Good; some spine slit and ends, moderate right-edge tatter at front cover, pe…ripheral stains at engraving not affecting image. One of 48 separate serialized subscription offerings issued under the title "The Works of Shakspere (sic) Edited by Charles Knight", this entry in the series is All's Well That Ends Well / Act I, Scene I through Act V, Scene III, following a very large engraving, "Autolycus (The Winter's Tale)", executed by C.R. Leslie, A.R.A. Pinx T. and Lumb Stocks R.A., Sculpt., then 5 pp. of introductory information, then the work itself. A scarce form of Knight's editing, and one claimed by the probably-not-unbiased Virtue & Yorston to be "The Best Edition of Shakspere Published" (referring to the entire subscription series of 48 numbers). Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. WOODS, Henry (1846-1921). Autograph letter signed to engraver Lumb Stocks. Casa Raffaeli, 940 San Trovaso, Venice, 2 February 1882. 1 sheet, written on one side. Very good condition. Light age-toning, small crease to upper corner. A letter written from Woods's Venetian residence at… San Trovaso during the early phase of his long Italian career. Addressed to Lumb Stocks (1812-1892), Associate Engraver of the Royal Academy and a senior figure within the London art world, Woods thanks him for a very kind letter of congratulation and remarks that 'My work is well advanced, but many difficulties have yet to come in my large picture - I hope you are getting on well with your picture for the R.A.' He notes that he has been able to work out of doors throughout the Venetian winter. By 1882 Woods, though only thirty-six, had already established himself as a successful exhibitor at the Royal Academy and was becoming known for the carefully observed Venetian genre scenes that would define his reputation. Stocks, over thirty years his senior, was a respected engraver associated with the Royal Academy and The Art Journal, and regularly engraved after leading painters of the day. Signed by Author(s).

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. GODWIN, George (1813-1888). Autograph letter signed to engraver Lumb Stocks (1812-1892) concerning engravers & engraving. 6 Cromwell Place, 9 May 1879. Autograph letter signed, one bifolium, written on two pages, dated at head '6 Cromwell Place / May 9/79.' Old horizontal fold, lig…ht creasing and minor handling wear. A very good example. An autograph letter from the architect, journalist and long-serving editor of The Builder, George Godwin (1813-1888), addressed to the highly respected British engraver Lumb Stocks (1812-1892). Godwin writes that he 'should much like to have five minutes talk with you (Lumb) as to the present position of Engravers & Engraving,' proposing a meeting either at his home or at the Art Union Office, and noting that he is 'having to say a few words publicly on the subject on Thursday evening,' so that Stocks 'trouble might not wholly be thrown away.' By the 1870s traditional line engraving faced increasing competition from wood engraving and emerging photomechanical processes, raising questions about professional viability and artistic standing. Godwin's speech, most likely to the Art Union, that he co-founded, was to touch on this issue, and he sought out Lumb's considered opinion on the matter. Godwin was a central figure in Victorian architectural and design reform and, as editor of The Builder for over four decades, exercised considerable influence over artistic and professional discourse. He was also associated with the Art Union movement, which promoted fine art through subscription distribution. Lumb Stocks, a distinguished line engraver, exhibited at the Royal Academy and produced numerous plates for The Art Journal and for the Art Union of London, engraving after artists such as Daniel Maclise, David Wilkie and Joseph Paton. An interesting association between two respected figures of the Victorian art world. Signed by Author(s).

Aggiungi al carrello2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Stocks begins the letter: 'I beg to renew my agitation on the subject of Webster's picture of the "Dame School", as I am now ready to proceed with those parts in which it is desirable to refer to the original'. He will be grateful if Hogarth will 'put this matter in the prope…r train for its accomplishment'. He hopes that 'Mr. Vernon [the art collector Robert Vernon] may be induced to part with the picture if but for a short time'. Even a loan for 'a month or six weeks' would assist Stocks in his work.
