Lightly starting after text pages. Dustjacket in overall good, interior in very good condition. Sasha Stone (18951940) was born in St. Petersburg to Jewish parents. He studied technical engineering at the Warsaw Technical Institute from 19111913 and immigrated to the United States in the same year, enlisted in the US Army, served during W.W.I. and was honorably discharge in 1919. Stone was granted a stay at the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Art Training Center in Paris after the war and moved to Berlin later in 1918 while keeping his Paris studio for a while. In Berlin he met Aleksandr Archipenko and started to contribute to Berlin magazines. In 1924 he opened the Atelier Stone with his wife Cami and in 1928 officially changed his name to Sasha Stone. His lack of success as an artist prompted him to pick up photography. Having success in this field he became known for the cover photo in Walter Benjamin's book "Einbahnstrasse (One-way-street) and contributed to Adolf Behne's Berlin in Bildern. His work was part of the first international photography exhibition in Essen and the Werkbund exhibition Film und Fotografie in Stuttgart.

Sasha Stone (1895-1940) belonged to the circle around the constructivist periodical "G", which included Moholy-Nagy, Mies van der Rohe, El Lissitzky and Walter Benjamin. He created the photomontage for the dust-jacket of Benjamin's famous book "Einbahnstraße" (One-Way Street). Stone's nude work appeared in "Femmes," where his High Modernist nude figure studies emphasize sculptural form and unexpected angles. Some rubbing, creasing, and age-toning along edges of portfolio. Twenty loose leaves (title page and nineteen black and white photographs) in a cream coloured board folder, spine in cream linen with a black and white photograph of a woman on the upper cover. Housed in a blue purpose made box lettered in gilt on the spine. There is some rubbing and wear to the folder itself and to the photograph on the cover. Plate 8 has a small closed tear to the left edge, plate 13 has a small tear to the upper left corner and a crease along the left edge and plate 20 has a small tear to the lower right corner and a crease the bottom edge. Otherwise, the plates are in very good condition. Sasha Stone (1895-1940) was born Alexander Steinsapir in Russia. Having settled in America in 1913, he served in the US Army during WWI. After his discharge, he worked as a sculptor in Paris and then a painter before turning to photography. His images demonstrate the eye of a sculptor and these examples of the female form have a classical sculptural quality. Stone also worked with modernist and surrealist groups including members of Bauhaus and it might even be argued that these nudes suggest, in their combination of faktura and tektonika, the influence of constructivism.
