Die Präsenz seiner Bilder in der illustrierten Presse, die Tatsache, daß er auf der epochemachenden internationalen Ausstellung des Deutschen Werkbundes Film und…Foto 1929 in Stuttgart als Fotograf mit den meisten Bildern vertreten war - Formen der öffentlichen Anerkennung wie diese sind es zunächst, die auf den Rang seiner Bilder verweisen. Dennoch ist seine Arbeit im öffentlichen Bewußtsein weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Ein entscheidender Grund dafür liegt darin, daß selbst jene, die sich über die Bedeutung von Stones Werk im klaren waren, so gut wie nichts über ihn und sein Leben wußten. In den einschlägigen fotohistorischen Dokumentationen konnten nur die überaus spärlichen biographischen Angaben wiederholt werden, die die Zeitschrift Gebrauchsgraphik' 1930 ihren Lesern in einem kurzen Artikel über Stone mitgeteilt hatte. Das war kaum mehr, als daß er in Rußland geboren sei, in Amerika gearbeitet und. nach einem Kunststudium in Paris, in Berlin als Fotograf gelebt habe. Sasha Stone (1895-1940) belonged to the circle around the constructivist periodical "G", which included Moholy-Nagy, Mies van der Rohe, El Lissitzky and Walter Benjamin. He created the photomontage for the dust-jacket of Benjamin's famous book "Einbahnstraße" (One-Way Street). Stone's nude work appeared in "Femmes," where his High Modernist nude figure studies emphasize sculptural form and unexpected angles. Some rubbing, creasing, and age-toning along edges of portfolio. Inside of spine partly taped. Minor creasing along edges of title and last plate. Tiny closed tear taped at verso of plate #20. Title-page in French. Clamshell-box in overall very good, portfolio in fair to good-, interior in good+, plates in very good condition.

Housed in a blue purpose made box lettered in gilt on the spine. There is some rubbing and wear to the folder itself and to the photogra…ph on the cover. Plate 8 has a small closed tear to the left edge, plate 13 has a small tear to the upper left corner and a crease along the left edge and plate 20 has a small tear to the lower right corner and a crease the bottom edge. Otherwise, the plates are in very good condition. Sasha Stone (1895-1940) was born Alexander Steinsapir in Russia. Having settled in America in 1913, he served in the US Army during WWI. After his discharge, he worked as a sculptor in Paris and then a painter before turning to photography. His images demonstrate the eye of a sculptor and these examples of the female form have a classical sculptural quality. Stone also worked with modernist and surrealist groups including members of Bauhaus and it might even be argued that these nudes suggest, in their combination of faktura and tektonika, the influence of constructivism.
